No, they're just compromising their own personal values in the hope that it gives their child a foot up in what is an intrinsically unfair and systematically discriminatory system. Of course in doing so they do heighten the chance that their offspring will be berks though, so swings and roundabouts.

Most of the people I know (Friends to boot) who went to Woodbridge School are drongo's, lots have drug and alcohol issues, brought on partly because they never felt that they could live up to the high expectations from their successful parents. One, I know, who's father sold his business for £8m is still lodging with mates at the age of 45, because he feels he doesn't need to work. Interestingly, the friends who got Scholarships, tended to do very well and thrived given the opportunity and environment. Edit -Hope I haven't opened up a can of worms.... I've friends who were educated privately who are perfectly decent, hard working, well rounded, humble and kind men, however I've come across a few as you describe that might as well be 15 forever, only with more money and opportunity than I'll ever have in my lifetime. I guess my problem is with privilege, not with private education, it just so happens a good proportion of those in private education are party to that kind of privilege.

Depends when they went to Woodbridge - Mrs O went to Woodbridge in the late 70s, early 80s and is a reasonably well adjusted person (being an accountant that is, though she did marry an oik born in Tooting, brought up in Basildon..). But, it did help that her Dad was the nicest and most generous guy you could ever meet (he even paid for my first ITFC season ticket when we moved here in the 90s!) which was amazing for an Insurance Sales Director!

My Godfather once asked me how I felt about it being likely that I;d never be as successful as my Dad (they were very good mates). stinger, from an unexpected quarter (because it was so true) Looking back on it, I think that was the moment I realised just how bad his alcholism was (we were sharing a bottle of red at the time).

very. If I'd have been on the ball, I'd have turned the question back on him (he was always my Dad's deputy at work). But I was too hurt tbh. One of those moments that will always stick. Don;t see him much these days despite the offical title. Anyway, continue...!

Thats what my brother told me the next day, while I was still stunned! Anyway, dada was a great man and recognised as such by everyone who knew him, so I can live with it.

| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.
