Williamson on face coverings in schools 16:43 - Aug 24 with 1302 views | Mullet | What do parents of TWTD think about it? I'm not sure if he's talking about secondary or primary, presumably both. That in itself is an issue if so, as the two settings are very different I would argue. There are specific things he says here which I think are factually incorrect, but that's by the by, do we think given the WHO advice that at least in secondary schools masks will become mandatory as we head towards winter?

Indeed. Followed by mass outbreaks in schools a week later... which will then be followed by closing multiple schools.

We are in our third week of schools being open up here. So far no issues or sudden spikes. The SCottish government are considering making secondary pupils wear masks in the corridors but not in the classroom.

Williamson on face coverings in schools on 19:12 - Aug 24 with 1078 views | CBBlue | They've spent most of the day saying how incredibly safe schools will be for the kids, how they won't catch it in school and if they do they'll usually be symptom free, more likely to be hit by a bus blah blah blah. Being a bit quieter about the adults in the schools though. The case in Scotland (albeit a special school so harder to social distance*) and 20 adults with it shows just how easily it can be spread. So Mullet, FixedIt and other teachers out there - what are your views on wearing masks? *having said that, I've been told in primary they'll be no social distancing within their bubbles anyway.

Well lets hope it stays like that. However, I would feel much safer in Tesco without a mask than in a crowded classroom with a greater likelihood of viral overload. Having said that, I'm not sure teaching whilst wearing a mask is very practical either.

I taught in school when we had vulnerable students and key worker kids in. Felt very safe because there were small numbers per group, and they were well-drilled regarding social distancing etc. When school re-opens next week, all the kids will be back and they will be taught in normal class sizes, with the only distancing being teachers 2m away at the front of class. It is what it is, but there seems to be little regard for teacher safety. I'm not convinced that the 2m will make the slightest difference to the amount of potential exposure to the virus there will be in a crowded classroom with limited ventilation over the course of a day/week/month. I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best....

As a parent, I'm relieved that my boy will soon be back at school and with apologies, I do think that trumps all other considerations. However, It does seem like teacher have been hung out to dry. The govt had a chance to provide better facilties and more space, but wasted it so now the only option is cross fingers and hope.

I think the 'cross fingers and hope' option is what follows all or most of their decisions or non decisions- followed by the often used 'U tun' option. [Post edited 24 Aug 2020 19:52]

Do you know what the class room set up will be like Ulla? With some of the guidance here, and the way the classroom is going to be structured, any parent thinking their child going back to school will be experiencing a 'normal' environment is likely to be shocked and disappointed. The kids won't even really be able to socialise. I imagine the situation here is much worse than in the UK though, but I was just curious if you'd been told what to expect at all?

Williamson on face coverings in schools on 19:55 - Aug 24 with 968 views | cbower | Post October half term when loads of kids and staff get coughs and colds there will be lots of absence as parents will start to keep kids off school. As soon as there is a confirmed case in a school, panic will set in and the experts will reiterate the benefits of face coverings and, 2 months too late, the government will make them mandatory. The complete lack of any mention of the safety of adults in schools, probably 10% of my school population speaks volumes. I am glad I am no longer Senior Leadership as the complete lack of government leadership is leaving them very vulnerable and they will be seen by many as the ones to carry the can if and when things go wrong in individual schools. Hey ho, 2 years till 55 and maybe pastures new.

Yes they conveniently forget that it was a limited number of children in VERY small bubbles when giving us the 'statistics' of how few infections there were in schools. As a key worker my son went in some days during this period and I felt he was very safe but bubbles of 60 (or much more in some schools) and no social distancing does have me worried for Sept. Wonder if they'll have a re-think when schools have to start partially closing because they don't have enough well teachers available. I completely get your concerns, not sure what age you teach but can imagine at secondary level the risks are so much greater for teachers. Also with autumn/winter on it's way how likely will keeping the windows and doors open be possible for.

We only have a rough idea of what the setup will be. The class is being split into 2 or 3 groups, but weirdly, all groups will be in the classroom at the same time. The classrooms at our school happen to be tiny, so I don’t think they had much choice (there was a campaign to get portacabins installed to help with that, but it came to naught). In our school (secondary) each Year Group will be taught in a 'bubble' which will limit movement and inter-mixing. Teachers will move from bubble to bubble, but kids won't. Break times will be staggered and segregated, although I have no idea how that will he supervised/staffed. The kids will find it difficult to adapt to the limited movement and I suspect behaviour will be an issue, especially as most will not have been in school for 6 months.

I find their chosen narrative very irritating because it's so cherry picked and seems to be for a specific audience. Teacher safety seems to be totally ignored, which is telling. There is also the fact that students and by extension their parents haven't all followed the guidelines and trying to instil more and stricter rules with children who have had no structure for months will be the bigger challenge. I'll be wearing one around school and moving from lessons but not to teach in. I'll be insisting all my staff stay at the front of the room and don't risk anything. I'm not sure that masks become anything more than yet another uniform headache for all of us as some students will struggle to afford them/follow the rules/wear one that is appropriate etc. However, I'd rather be in school with them than at home where I can't have such an impact.
