Klopp moaning again about two games a week 13:03 - Nov 23 with 1841 views | Basuco | Is it really that difficult for players to play two games of 90 minutes with a 15 minute break in the middle, with the ball actually in play 40 to 50 minutes per game, twice a week? I think this is just another push to get the Premier League reduced to 18 teams so they can travel to more midweek Champions league games in an expanded champions League, as this is will worth much more financially to them than domestic fixtures. Or am I being cynical? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55038298

How does it risk injury? Three days rest after 40 - 50 minutes of exercise! Total rest from midday every afternoon! It does not take that long to recover from a major effort.

But I think it is clear that this season the level of injuries is higher than previous seasons (More games, less time inbetween) - hence the calls for 5 subs from many - to spread the playing time and reduce the risk of injuries.

Non, I admit that, but as an amateur cyclist I was able to ride a 70 or 80 mile road race Saturday and Sunday , ride an evening track meeting on a Tuesday and Wednesday and had a full time job where I spent most of the day on my feet. You do have to look after yourself, keeping muscles and knee tissue warm in cold conditions, good warm up and warm down, massage before and after exercise, protein shake after exercise. What would Klopp say if they had to do what teams did in the past, when Town played Norwich on Boxing Day and Arsenal at Highbury the following day! I really can't see how two games a week can cause injury unless the players are not following the basics.
Klopp moaning again about two games a week on 13:39 - Nov 23 with 1731 views | hoppy | It's a Liverpool thing. Some other scousers have been heard talking about having 8 days a week. How would Klopp cope with that?

So you don't actually have any specialist knowledge at all, but you used to ride your bike a fair bit. Glad we've established that.

It's elite sport, the physical intensity of it is ludicrously high.

How many do they have in their squad? Is that not part of the modern game, having massive squads that can cope... unlike the days when Sir Bobby used something like 16 players or so in a season that comprised 4 different competitions?

Correct, just 17 years of repeated intense physical effort at a reasonable level several times a week. I probably find it difficult to get my head round this as over lock down I watched 90's and 2000's games, they were played at a much faster tempo than this years games, with the ball in play much more. Throw ins, free kicks and goal kicks take an age to be taken these days. Football today is at a much slower pace than in the past, but players need more rest.

The key word being ‘amateur’. Don’t different sports require different levels of fitness? A professional cyclist who specialises in mountain cycling body won’t be conditioned to playing professional football or rugby etc. Different sports require different attributes.

That's almost semi-pro levels of cycling, as a Cat 3 I never rode more than one road race a weekend and they were never more than 40 miles. Max TT distance was 50 miles (and usually a couple of 10s or 25s a week) and racing at Eastway once a week during July and August and cyclo cross in the winter - and that was at a very average level. Most of the top amateurs or semi-pros I knew had a fully planned season by the end of Jan and rarely deviated from that. Plus there wren't as many impact injuries as footballers get (apart from the track cyclists, who were absolute nutters as I recall!)

These Prem clubs pump in millions into sports science and physiotherapy every year to keep the players in the best possible condition. Im sure they wouldn't bother investing that much money if it was as simple as massaging their legs and giving them a protein shake. To try and compare weekend cycling to professional football is laughable. I bet most non league players are fit enough to do what you've stated, let alone prem players.

I was a 2nd/1st Cat roadman sprinter, I rode Welwyn and Harlow track leagues mid week, I was rubbish at TT's I suppose it down to preparation for races of that length. I did a winter program of 300 miles a week November through to March, with a 100 mile ride every Sunday in Jan and Feb with first race the first weekend in March. It is down to knowing what you will be competing at and preparing your fitness to be able to perform at that level throughout the season. BTW, I have still got my old steel 5 3 1 frame with campag super record group set.

Klopp moaning again about two games a week on 16:06 - Nov 23 with 1530 views | jonbull88 | I’d be up for limiting the league to 18, on the basis the champions league isn’t expanded and they reduce the spots to the top 2. If they can’t play 2 games a week with a little bit of travelling they can’t be flying round Europe then simples.
