And planning to spend Christmas elsewhere, I would go now.

Or as an alternative stay home during a pandemic.

Sounds sensible, but some people sadly are more vulnerable.

My brother in Surrey was planning to spend Xmas in Ipswich with my mum (who’s on her own). Guessing that won’t be happening now. Which is the right thing but boy does it suck. Shame on everyone who fell for the lovable clown Boris routine. An incompetent charlatan who should have resigned in shame months ago.

Seems like many have left already, even in a normal year people are travelling in numbers from last weekend before Christmas.

I was provisionally going back to Ipswich but looks like it’ll be Christmas on my own. I wouldn’t mind but the covid rate in Ipswich is higher than in Camden.

So... It looks like I will have to keep my dad in London for Xmas, in our over crowded 2nd floor flat rather than his spacious house with a big garden.

Sorry to hear that.

My uncle was meant to be visiting my parents for Christmas. He’s had a very challenging year mentally and he was really looking forward to it. Saddens me that he’ll be on his own, but needs must I guess.

Silly post they are currently not allowed to travel, except in certain circumstances, and couldn't overnight in any case unless for work, and a few other specific reasons.

Absolutely livid. My mum is away for a 3 night break in a tier 2 area from 27th. I was hoping it would be cancelled. Sounds mean but ffs we're playing with fire.

I was really hoping they would bump everyone up a tier.

Truly impaired.

Still think we missed a trick - from yesterday 2 week lockdown taking us to NYD. Schools closed anyway and most industries close down for most of that period.

2 weeks, like Spain had earlier in the year - you cannot leave home for ANY reason unless medical emergency.

That would stop the spread.

If the new strain really is up to 70% more infectious it's awful. C19 is very contagious anyway, they really need to try and stop the new variant expanding although over the long run that is of course impossible.

What they can do is slow the transmissions to other areas and thus reduce the hospitalisations.

They must be seriously spooked by this new variant to be announcing this.

This. From what I've seen anecdotally people have been fed up for a while and will know that there isn't the manpower to enforce tier 4 rules.

That's exactly what you shouldn't be doing. This is part of the reasons numbers arnt going down, because people keep bending the rules to suit themselves.

Not sure what else he’s supposed to do! Don’t think it’s really fair to blame or mock him for needing to change th8ngs as things evolve.

Really? They’ll be breaking the rules, which I would suggest isn’t advisable.

I’ve significantly changed my plans, as will many people. People need to take some personal responsibility.

if it adds 0.4 to r then there is little prospect of r ever falling below 1 in the areas with this variant. there is therefore the potential for rapid spread which out paces hospital capacity. which has always been the biggest fear in government. so in that sense it does seem scarey.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

My observation is that most people are just ignoring the endlessly changing rules. Not particularly on purpose but just through fatigue.

My post was more in reference to the impending announcement, rather than advice, albeit poorly worded I agree.

Hugely sympathetic to those this impacts, especially those who are more lonely and vulnerable and particularly reliant on Christmas, especially with so much uncertainty so late in the day. It’s felt entirely avoidable. Given the data it’s for the best though.
