What about WWII facts? Here goes: 1) Around 300,000 Russian soldiers were killed by their own commanders in WWII (desertion, "cowardice", disobeying orders etc.), which is more than the entire toll of British troops killed by the enemy during the same war. And, 2) Britain suffered "only" (still horrific) 2% of all Allied military deaths in WWII. Yugoslavia lost more Allied troops than us (3%). Russians were no more than firing practice for the Axis it seems, accounting for 65% of all military deaths. China was next with 23%.

Here's another POW fact:

Captured paras being marched away by the Germans were surprised to find a merchant seaman in their midst. He'd gone for a ride with his brother in one of the resupply planes which was shot down.

Good stats. How’s this:
Covid-19 has killed more British civilians in 9 months than the Luftwaffe managed throughout the whole Second World War...

Not a single Australian batsman was given out LBW during the entire 1970-71 Ashes series. This was despite the series comprising 6 Tests (plus one which was abandoned without a ball being bowled) and England taking 100 wickets in the series.
For the record, 5 Englishmen were given out LBW in the series, which England won 2-0.

Here's a couple of footie ones:

(1) Fulham hold the record for the highest number of seasons in the English top flight without winning a major trophy, 27 years and counting. (Although they won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002).

Next is Crystal Palace, 20 seasons and counting. (Although they won the Full Members' Cup in 1991).

(2) James Alabi is the only Town player to have played in just one first team game and scored a goal. This might be a multiple record, as this one appearance was as a substitute (away vs Doncaster in the League Cup in 2015).

Now I've read The Spin, here's that list of solitary Test centurions:

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?CMP=spin_email;class=1

Some unexpected ones - Rob Key was unlucky with the players he was up against - some more so - Broad, Woakes. I saw Tim Ambrose's solitary century in Wellington, once teams worked out he only had one scoring shot he didn't score quite so freely.

Batsmen are "worked out" by analysis so much more quickly these days because the Test playing nations have analysts who watch endless footage of players, especially new ones. A really good player will be able to adjust his game, which is what Test cricket should be all about.

Always thought they ditched Lythe a bit too early. Would have liked to have seen him have another go against someone other than Australia

I thought Sam Robson looked a more likely Test player than Lyth - averaged 10 more in the same number of Tests. He still looks very much a red ball cricketer.

Indeed.

Although i also note your LBW stat from above and think of the impact of DRS on LBW decisions, especially to spin.

Yes, DRS has changed the game completely for spinners & also umpires no longer assume the batsman is playing a stroke if he thrusts his pad at the ball with the bat tucked behind.
As far as the 70-71 Ashes was concerned, LBWs were generally hard to get anyway in Australia because the far bouncier pitches meant so many deliveries were passing over the top of the stumps. Still many appalling decisions in that series, largely in favour of Australia, notably Keith Stackpole e.g. clearly run out for 24 in the first Test & went on to make 207.

Yes it’s odd how some get multiple chances and develop into fine test players and others just don’t get thbreak.
