I'm no Covid expert, so for those that are, why is it ok to walk in a 2 14:43 - Jan 5 with 1845 viewsOsborneOneNil

......but can't play a round of golf, in a 2?

Only difference is a bag of clubs on your shoulder. Clubhouse is shut, don't touch each other's balls (oo-er), and the pins are left in.

I appreciate there are more serious discussions to be had on the subject of lockdown, but just wondered what people thought.

Because golf is a dreadful abomination and should be stamped out.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I'd still be happy if they banned 2 balls but allowed solo 1 balls!

playing alone, that's got to be safe right?

Because they're trying to encourage people to not leave their local area - ie exercise from home.

Unless you live on a golf course, you'll have to travel, and that is when people start taking the pish.

Guess it's the travel - would be fine for me as I am literally looking at the golf course out of my office window - but most don't live that close.

Where my Mum and Dad are members, they had to stop people who lived in Tier 4 areas travellind to them in Tier 2 as their membership is quite far reaching

Yeah guess so.

Same as you though, it's no distance to our course. Seems a shame.

More to do with the numbers expected to turn up at a golf club during a lockdown and potential for queuing at the tee I would imagine.

I know at mine you can arrive at the first an hour after the last round tee'd off and still catch them up by the 5th the speed that some of the old guys play at.

clearly the OP hasn't read the multiple comments about this on another thread.

I have friends who are keen golfers and they say they have seen packed courses with 4 ball groups, guys drinking together and then all jumping in a cab together at the end.

It's not golf or tennis that is unsafe, it's some of the idiots who play and use it as an excuse to socialise. Idiots fecking it up for everyone else...so no option for a blanket ban to stop the idiots getting out on the course/court

People can't remember all the rules and exceptions unless they're forced on them, which is understandable as there were so many, so I think a blanket ban on everything is simply the easiest way of getting people to be compliant.

When we were at school the idea of teacher keeping us all in at break when the culprits were often known but only suffered what everybody did seemed intrinsically unfair. I don't play golf myself, but Hey ho!

I agree it is unfair, but where are they expected to draw the line. What about the anglers, the cycle clubs etc.

I know someone who just had his clubs in the back of his car as some sort of get out of jail card if he was ever stopped.

Just seems like anecdotal evidence - nothing I've heard from the myriad of golfers I know locally - you turn up at your tea time, rules had changed again so only in the household bubble plus one other, clubhouses shut - even when they were open recently chad to sit on your own table etc.

It's up to these things to be managed by the clubs - but how can a course be packed with 4 balls, at most it is about 80 people across a multi-acre site

Yeah, that's it, in a nutshell.

As someone alluded to, 4 lads lashed up on a course then a taxi home is poor form, and not something I've seen at our club. Back in the day, yes, but not in recent times. A 2 ball only ruling would work at our place, for sure.

But yes, there are far worse issues.

You are missing the point.

Yes there are rules, but people (and some courses) that don't adhere to them. So simple solution....blanket ban.

It sucks (well for those who play golf) but blame those that are choosing to ignore rules and feck it up for everyone else. It was a small minority but rule breakers are becoming increasingly more prevalent.

I feel sorry for golfers etc but its the right call because we unfortunately have to reduce as many setting open for abuse of lockdown rules as possible to get this under any kind of control before vaccine can have any impact.

I don't think I am missing the point - otherwise literally everything might as well be shut as everything is open for abuse.

Yes basically everything is being shut, unless deemed essential. It's a 'lockdown' of a kind...not go have a jolly on the golf course.

Obviously some form of exercise is needed for physical and mental health so some things such as running/walking which are less open to abuse are of course permitted.

I don't like it one bit either...but i think many people are failing to see how serious things are this time...this is crunch point. The virus needs to be brought under controll or we have a major problem....and if we don't control transmission further mutations are possible.

And for those that say it's impossible to control before vaccine...well NZ / Australia and much of Asia are doing a pretty good job.

Perople can't be trusted in the UK because of our 'freedom of choice' blah blah, so govt has to take more drastic action.

A Jolly ? assuming you don't like/play golf? for people who play it is their exercise,it's their 3 hours away from work, away from this mess and the worry that comes with it.A game of golf in the fresh air is invigorating take it from me it does me the world of good and as I said previously it's safer than going for a walk where you would in all likelihood pass people several times

Some people have treated it as a jolly...because more people play golf as a social thing as much as for exercise. What percentage of rounds are played by someone playing on their own? Very low I expect.

Also to go for a walk you do not have to travel. To play golf the majority will require some form of travel. Travel is only supposed to be essential currently. I get you are sad you can't play golf but we are all impacted in some way and have to make sacrifices.

I like to swim, play football, play tennis etc. That is my exercise...but it is right i cannot participate in those currently, I'll exercise by walking or running on my own directly from my house and not having to travel.

Golf is not safer than a walk if groups back up on tees or feel they can use the opportunity to catch up with people socially, which has happened previously. People drive, share lifts, get close together in car parks, use toilets etc etc.

I'm not here to argue, but i can see why golf is something that has been stopped based on the behaviour of some playing previously with restrictions in place.
