Change of owner 23:24 - Jan 13 with 4550 views | nodge_blue | I was just watching Alex griffin YT channel, discussing Mike Ashley as potential new owner. Regardless of opinions on Ashley, isn’t the fact that the salary cap in div one means that we could have Elon musk as owner but he could only spend 2 million on wages and therefore wouldn’t attract any better players? So it’s a waste of time pinning hopes on that as a way forward?

I don't think there's any chance we'll get a buyer though, so our best hope is Evans gets someone in with football knowledge and give them greater autonomy over transfers and direction of the club.

Change of owner on 03:28 - Jan 14 with 4294 views | Kievthegreat | Players under 21 aren't counted to the wage cap. So in theory you could have 10 players on £5k pw on 22+ year olds and unlimited on 21 and younger for the rest of the squad.

I think that's the key really, I wonder if the new rules mean you would have to 'financially' dope behind the scenes on the academy and infrastructure etc? The reality though is the quality of League One and below is going to fly down and clubs above League One will be expecting to pillage clubs of any of their decent players. I fear this could be as damaging as our relegation from Premier League if we don't get back up this season! [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 8:08]

It's more likely that wage levels in L1 are going to decline than the standard of the football, really. The vast majority of players are here because they aren't good enough to play higher up, not because the wages are competitive. IIRC most of our lot had to take a 60% pay cut when we went down. If they had been able to easily get transfers back to the Championship they would have done. We've had one year of wage cap so far and the main result was just to put a bunch of L1 fringe players out of work. Didn't see any cheap transfers out of the division, really.

Will be a bit of both, no doubt it will be easier for clubs to stockpile players but that largely happens anyway. Ultimately though there’s only a finite amount of players and those clubs won’t want to have players on the wage bill they have no use for. And those that clubs would be most likely to take a punt on will be those younger prospects that fall outside of the cap There are still advantages for bigger clubs at this level if they’re clever* about it - for example offering contracts with significant increases triggered in the event of promotion *which no doubt rules us out

....and this is true, he stood next to me once at Carrow Road and proceeded to hold his phone up videoing the match. I politely asked him to desist or I would insert the phone into "natures pocket" for him. He moved to a different seat.

For sure but Championship clubs are going to see it as an opportunity There's going to be players who want to remain on their current pay structure, that's simple economics Whether they are good enough is another issue but it's a great opportunity to pick up some bargains from the lesser clubs, as everyone looks to cut their cloth

All true, but then Evans has been involved in some highly dubious business practices and looking on the internet at reviews from people who have worked for him, his employment practices are not great either. Unfortunately the days of the Cobbold type ownership are long gone. Most owners would not stand close examination of their backgrounds, which is why the FA don’t look very hard!
