So the ERG morph into the CRG 23:34 - Feb 13 with 2392 viewsElderGrizzly

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that the group of Tory MPs telling Johnson to ignore the experts on Covid are the same ones who said we’d had enough of experts on Brexit.

They’ve literally just replaced one letter in their acronym too.

ERG has become CRG 🙄

I think the debate about how quickly we move out of lockdown will be one of the most important of our time. This isn’t like last time. I hope and think this time we are coming out for good, the vaccine will be the key difference. Come out too quickly and we risk a resurgence of the disease and more loss of life, too slowly and further economic destruction and mental (as well as non-Covid) health problems. It’s going to be a very delicate balance to strike.
One thing is for sure though, at whatever pace they go there will be some saying it is too quick and others saying it is too slow.

The disastrous national response to this virus is 100% down to the fact that our PM would be in the CRG if he were a a backbencher.

It's mad that a group of 70 Tory backbenchers, mostly middle aged white men dripping with privilege, have exerted so much influence over so many important issues in recent years. Their hard right agenda - which just happens to further perpetuate their own wealth and privilege - is far from being mainstream and yet they've had their hands on the steering wheel for a significant chunk of the last decade. They're a cancer on this country.

Whilst true, they have been enabled by an electorate that broadly supports them (well 45% do while the 55% have their vote split between other options).

I think the main beneficiaries from an early exit from lockdown will be those in the mainly lower paid jobs such as retail and hospitality that will be able to go back to work quicker (and get back to 100% pay rather than 80% furlough).

A big chunk of that 45% don't necessarily support the ideology of the ERG/CRG though, loads of them vote Tory purely out of habit. The red wall voters they won over also don't support most of their ideology, they voted based primarily on Brexit.

I know. You think your own viewpoint is the only one that exists and anyone who diverges from that narrative is to be shut down to avoid any dissent. It’s you who loses out by having such a closed mind.

45% voted Conservative, these loons are a fringe group on the extreme right of the Tory party, UKIP in all but name.

The amount of influence they’ve been able to wield is insane, as is the damage they’ve done to this country.

A few of them actually used to be members of UKIP. George Eustice stood for them in the 1999 EU elections and Mark Jenkinson (new MP for Workington) stood for them in the same constituency in the 2015 General Election.

That’s certainly true but we are where we are so to speak.
I saw on the news this morning that 5 out of 6 deaths from Covid have been in the groups that have now been offered vaccines ... really spells out that if vaccines work as they should do we should be in a very different place in a very short amount of time.

Huge sections of the retails sector have been working all the way through. As have many of those in the gig economy driving deliveries. Likewise what's left of manufacturing.

They're also people working in the care and nursing home sectors. Who've spent the last year being exposed to massive levels of risk, both to them personally and to those they are entrusted with looking after thanks to the actions of the government.

These are the people that yet again, the far right are quite happy to expose to additional risk because they are disproportionately BAME, overseas workers or women.

I’m not sure that’s the case. I think the desire to get things open is to revive the economy (which will benefit everyone) and get things back to what is generally considered ‘normal’ in order to relieve the mental strain on everyone.

I think you give the CRG too much credit there Paz.

You may want the lockdown eased for those reasons but they’ve been opposed pretty much from day one on some weird libertarian grounds and because they’re professional complainers.

If you seriously think they’re motivated by wanting to ease the mental health pressure on the masses then that’s pretty naive.

They probably do care a little about the economy, in so far as it directly impacts on them, but they wouldn’t p1ss on a poor person if they were on fire.

There's no point rushing to open if we're going to be shut down yet again in a couple of months, that would cost us a lot more. Take as long as it takes to get it fully under control even if it takes until May/June, I'd rather have this as the last lockdown than plucking some date out of the air in April with no scientific reasoning behind it.

100%

I think anyone involved in hospitality would say the same, the absolute worst case scenario is to open up too soon (probably in a weird, loss making way) and then have to close again shortly afterwards.

There is also the factor of a lot of people completely disregarding all the rules once they'd had a few drinks like we had in the summer. You can put all the signs and sanitizer out but there's a proportion of people who just do as they please.

It’s odd how so many hardline Brexiteers in the public eye (politicians, their backers, media types, etc.) are also covid skeptics/anti-lockdown. I suppose it’s the libertarian link. Luckily it doesn’t seem like many of the public are falling for their bull this time around.

These idiots are doing so much damage to the country and the reputation of the Tory party.
