Bladeless wind turbine 07:26 - Mar 16 with 1228 views | StokieBlue | This is pretty cool although I am not sure about some of his statements. I actually find wind farms rather pretty and in many cases an addition to the view. I also think a 130m one of these would look worse than a wind turbine rather than better as he is claiming. It's a cool idea though, especially for smaller scale power generation where space is limited and as an extra option for household generation. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/mar/16/good-vibrations-bladeless-tu SB
Bladeless wind turbine on 07:39 - Mar 16 with 1163 views | Guthrum | It's an interesting concept. But by its very nature, the power output per individual unit will be miniscule compared with a traditional turbine. So you would need a heck of a lot of them to generate a useful amount of electricity. Probably works for something like portable lights or, as you say, supplementary domestic use.

Bladeless wind turbine on 07:54 - Mar 16 with 1128 views | wkj | I am very fond of vertical axis wind turbine designs, being a space nerd and the likely design they would use on Mars, so I can see this being a more common blueprint for terrestrial wind turbines in the coming decade. I still think we're missing a trick in the UK by taking away some of the incentive to installing Solar power, as our summers are seeing much less cloud cover now a days it seems. 130m seems extremely large vs the picture - ~425ft seems awfully tall.

Existing version is 3m that they intend to scale up to 130m

Bladeless wind turbine on 09:01 - Mar 16 with 1049 views | Pendejo | The Kent Innovation gets my vote "Vortex is not the only startup hoping to reinvent wind power. Alpha 311, which began in a garden shed in Whitstable, Kent, has begun manufacturing a small vertical wind turbine that it claims can generate electricity without wind. The 2 metre turbine, made from recycled plastic, is designed to fit on to existing streetlights and generate electricity as passing cars displace the air. Independent research commissioned by the company has found that each turbine installed along a motorway could generate as much electricity as 20 sq metres of solar panels, more than enough electricity to keep the streetlight on and help power the local energy grid, too. While our turbines can be placed anywhere, the optimal location is next to a highway, where they can be fitted on to existing infrastructure. There’s no need to dig anything up, as they can attach to the lighting columns that are already there and use the existing cabling to feed directly into the grid,” says Mike Shaw, a spokesperson for the company. “The footprint is small, and motorways aren’t exactly beauty spots.”

The 130m scaled up version should produce 1MW. Still not great compared to bladed turbines and I feel it would be very ugly compared to blade turbines. SB

Not sure about that when scaled up going to have a big foot print, the diameter will be massive.

I'm not sure I like the idea of a 130m wobbling column. Either in terms of sightliness or stability. It's going to take pretty massive foundations to keep it from falling over*. * Conservation of energy - to produce that much power will need a lot of leverage, in turn producing considerable forces upon the base.
