Even the term looks weird and of course conceptually I knew this would go on but the sheer scale of it is incredible:

I guess unless you're buying from the fishmonger who buys direct from the boat or even directly from the boat itself you can never be totally sure.

It was ever thus. At your fish and chip shop 'rock salmon' contains no rocks and no salmon.

And before monkfsih became trendy in this country those that weren't used as animal feed were turned into scampi.

Now in an era when people are daft enough to buy flash-frozen food from the other side of the world its simply on a bigger scale

People a fighting back though, looking at the title of the OP I thought 'that's a single post thread'; but since then it has added a fair bit of mussels...

In a serious comment on Stokie's original point, I am not even sure that you can trust produce that comes straight off the boat - I have seen those big plastic trays full of shellfish being loaded ONTO a trawler at a local quayside. Dunno, maybe the boat was just being used as a means of transport by someone who had a surplus and needed to shift it.

on a serious note the vast majority of seafood I eat I buy from the bloke on the beach 1/4 mile from where I live who goes out his boat and catches it himself.

Its brill

It’s my bloody internet - I post something, lose signal and it fires a blank - apologies.
Just saying that monkfish is now the opposite, crazy price to get in. We’ve done it as a ‘monkfish scampi’ and people absolutely love it. Change of people’s perspective purely from price.

Not just fish - trying to get a proper lamb curry is almost impossible. I had one recently and the 'lamb' would have been better off in a steak pie.
