The "we need to be competitive" argument is entirely self-sustaining. If they all did it, where else would the players go to get higher wages? Would Messi really want to disappear off into the obscurity of some Chinese or Gulf league?

That is one of the stupid things about this situation. The top clubs are vastly loaded with debt, just they struggle less than those lower down in being able to service them. They've painted themselves into a corner, are unwilling to cut back and now need a new injection of cash.

Which is why this plan is not a true breakaway, but rather a wish to have extra cake on top of what they are already scoffing.
