James Anderson on 10:03 - Aug 26 with 951 views | Herbivore | I think he's in the mix. At their absolute best I think there are better seam bowlers but you have to factor in his longevity and over how many years he's managed to sustain close to his best form. His record stands up to the greats of the game for sure.

James Anderson on 10:04 - Aug 26 with 939 views | Sparky85 | English bowler - yes Pace bowler - yes Overall - Still got a way to go to overtake Warne and Murali, which he probably won't. An argument can be give that pace bowlers have a disadvantage due to the stresses on the body. Plus, it is common that spin bowlers naturally bowl more overs in a game than pace. Would be interesting to see the difference in total number of overs bowled over the international career between the 3. But I don't think this is recorded anywhere. As an example, Shane Warne once bowled 98 overs in a match! A feat which no fast bowler will ever accomplish [Post edited 26 Aug 2021 10:18]

James Anderson on 10:08 - Aug 26 with 922 views | chicoazul | Dale Steyn imvho is the all format all conditions all time great. Much as I hate to say McGrath, him too. Jimmy is top 5 all time (or rather last 40 years or so) but not top 2. Best in the world now though.

I think Steyn, McGrath, and Anderson are the standout seam bowlers of recent times by some distance. All fantastic bowlers. I think at their very best Steyn and McGrath just had a little bit more about them and that's reflected in their better averages and strike rates. Anderson, though, has managed to sustain his best level for longer. I guess it depends on how you go about rating them.

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/93276.html Doesn't have overs but does include total deliveries so easy enough to work out how many overs.

You are right, Anderson has bowled far less... Muralitharan - 44039 balls / 800 wickets Warne - 40705 / 708 Kumble - 40850 / 619 Anderson - 35334 / 628 McGrath - 29248 / 563 Broad - 29863 / 524 So when you work it out, the strike rates are all remarkably close

Thanks Herbivore So 5,000 less deliveries than Warne and 10,000 less than MM If you average the balls/wickets, puts Jimmy above SW and only a few wickets behind MM. BUT if you apply the same logic to McGrath, then he would have more with the same longevity. Incredible feat in any case!

For me he is the best. He's getting better year on year at 39. That's incredible. There are seamers who have better averages & strike rates etc but they don't come close to Jimmy for me.

Ambrose & Walsh in the conversation too. There is an interesting discussion to be had on who from the past would have most benefitted from central contracts and being wrapped in cotton wool.

McGrath is the best comparison (style, skill, longevity) and I'd put them pretty much on a par. Warne and Muralitharan are a different kettle of fish, they use use magic rather than the laws of physics. I'm also convinced most wrist spinners don't know where the ball is actually going to go half the time, let alone the unfortunate batsmen.

Ah Devon - consistency was never his strong point but Steve Waugh said he found him one of the worst bowlers to face as you 'never' knew what was coming. I think he is also quoted as saying that the Aussies could never believe it when he wasn't in the starting squad - they hated facing him.

Steyn was a monster wasn't he.

James Anderson on 10:48 - Aug 26 with 723 views | catch74 | Very hard to compare, as someone has said - central contracts would have improved a large number of bowlers figures, the balls they used, the wickets they’ve played on, where their home wickets are. For English conditions he’s got to be right up there.
