Well I suppose if you’re comfortable with that then that’s your opinion. I’d wager most emergency services would say the modern car is the way forward and to remove these systems would be a very regressive position to take.

Less fuel economy, more pollution, less safety ... Electronic control allows a 1L, 3-cylinder engine to power a car which would formerly have required at least 50% more than that. Plus probably leaded fuel for lubrication. [Post edited 6 Sep 2021 10:27]

The latest developments are in electirc cars. The self driving Tesla car can be heralded as the vanguard of car development. This will eliminate driver error which is a major factor in driving accidents. Yet, Tesla have reminded their drivers that you need to be in the driving seat and ready to override the auto-driving mode where necessary. Those drunk enough to choose the back seat or fall asleep have found themselves involved in accidents. It would appear we can make cars safer but the obstacle to safer driving will always be the driver. I can understand Banksters desire to go back to a golden era of engine. I had a guy at the local garage who'd fix my old Fords. Bought for £100 and they'd last for 6 months with a bit of TLC. The insurance cost more than the car. Multiple dents, garish colours (lime green, beige, chocolate), ripped interiors and few driver comforts but a runner nonetheless. When I bought a Vauxhall Cavalier Sri for £3000 he wouldn't touch it. It was fuel injected so I had to have it serviced at the rip-off garages.

As mentioned in a different thread the Trabant electric may be the way forward. I am prepared to sacrifice self drive, radar and all the associated resource costs, maintainance costs etc and take the safety hit. But yes the peugeot 1.9 diesel was and still is a thing of longevity beauty!
