I wonder if it has anything to do with the split genesis of the lift and the lift shaft. I believe a Mr Cooper decided that the future of New York was vertical and so decided that at some point, somebody would invent a lift. With this in mind, he designed a round lift shaft some 4 years prior to the invention of the first functional lift... which was square.
