Those Newcastle owners have chosen the wrong club 14:11 - Nov 3 with 4044 viewsnodge_blue

Three managers reportedly turned them down.

World class players are never going to chose the north east of England to live. No matter how much wages Newcastle offer, which still has to be within financial fair play, they will still go to Barca or Madrid or London, Liverpool, Manchester.

And by the Xmas transfer window Newcastle could be so far behind that again top players will want to wait to see where they are at the end of the season.

Roy Keane said he couldn't get top players to Sunderland cos the wives wanted to shop in London. And it hasn't changed.

They chose badly.

Money talks though, bit of a difference of Keane saying players didn't want to go to Sunderland comparing then to Newcastle who's owners are worth £330b.

Yes but the other clubs pay top wages. And Newcastle will still have to operate under FFP.

They'll get good players in time no doubt. But I can't see a Ronaldo there.

Not many other choices really.

You'd want a club already in the Premier League, one with a big enough fan base that they can realistically be turned into a massive club with big enough investment. City and Chelsea are taken. Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and Man Utd's owners make a lot of money, so aren't really interested in selling (plus, big club remains big with Saudi backing doesn't work very well for sportswashing purposes).

So, you're left with what... Everton? Villa? Leeds? Wouldn't say any of those places are any more desirable to megastar footballers than Newcastle.

Ultimately, they've got the money so eventually they'll start accumulating elite level players, just as City did, despite East Manchester hardly being Paris or Madrid.

People keep saying that 'money talks' but the crème de la crème have their pick of the top clubs (that will be playing CL football) that all think nothing of paying £200k+ a week to players. It's going to be a funny time for Newcastle, because as you say, they could be bang in trouble come January and it's an even harder sell.

There seems to be this notion they can just replicate City but the game has changed since then. People also underestimate just how well run City are - yes, they spend money but everything about them is top notch, including recruitment/coaching. The likes of D Silva, Aguero, B Silva, KDB, Kompany etc were all very good players when they went there, but they weren't world class players.

Yep, agreed, but when you look at the landscape of club ownership then Newcastle are probably quite a snip at £330m given how high their ceiling is. When you see Arsenal turning down £3b from the bloke at Spotify (Rumored of course) you can see their isn't any value in buying already established top 6 clubs.

Why would they choose the North West (Manchester, L'pool) but not the North East, both are shlt holes? But they will go to the N East for the same reason they went to the N West, money, money, money

I'm sure Ipswich would figure much higher in most people's sh1holes list than all 3 of those cities.

In reality there's things to love about all 4 places and it's deeply weird to me how contemptuous people can be of seemingly most of the towns and cities in England.

Yep, the problem is that it will take an awful lot for Newcastle not to get relegated this year. The medium term prospects are a lot better for them but for any potential manager, and players, dropping down a division may not be high on their wishlist.

Actually, I think Newcastle will start signing some ageing superstars, plus some over-rated players. Whatever money they pay, they won't get the cream until the get into the CL. Currently they're in the relegation zone.
They've failed to get Conte & now Emery as manager.
It's going to be fun watching them throw cash around wildly. Eventually, they could do a Man City, but this will require an eye-watering amount of investment over several years.

I'm sure that shopping facilities are a factor in who wants the job.

But I would like to think the prospect of working for a murdering scumbag would also play a role in refusing the position.

Oh I do. You can have all the money in the world but if you have to constantly travel (down to London, up to Edinburgh) to spend it then whats the point?

birmingham and leeds are much bigger cities than newcastle and much closer to london, liverpool is similar, but also close to manchester.

all 3 would be classed as much bigger draws for footballers

(not for me, i'd love to live up that way, the northumberland coast is probably the best england has to offer, and scotland's on your doorstep!)

They weren't world class at the point they went to City. They were decent players and very shrewd purchases that were extremely well coached, improved and moulded into a side. That's my point, for all the money City have, they didn't just go out and buy a load of world class, oven-ready players to blitz the league. They built the entire infrastructure of the club up, off the pitch and on it, including recruitment, coaching etc.

People that think the City model will be easy to replicate are deluded IMO. Newcastle may well manage it, but it's odds on they don't.

I think it could change rapidly.

Once you get a couple of marquee signings be it players or managers then others will want to come. They might have to overpay for the first few to get them on board the new project but it'll happen. They have too much money for these players not to come.

Also, i wouldn't read into the paper talk too much.
