Just a few observations on new manager change day yesterday / big manager change today maybe in the Premiership (wasn't even in the chat room due to a volunteering commitment yesterday afternoon so cannot comment on Cook's performance.) The role of manager in the English game has changed in recent years so that they are more aligned to the Continental model of a coach who is given a squad of players to pick from either as a result of succession or a 'higher-up' dealing with player contracts, usually a combination of both. Maybe this is why Gerrard appears to have hit the ground running as he has had to deal with a board at Rangers who were no shrinking violets. There again, his predecessor at Villa had a winning start at Nodge. But that could be put down to releasing the Gilmour... David Moyes was not given enough time to outgrow the Ferguson era at United and establish his own tradition (not that he had the greatest of days yesterday but West Ham will still have another very good season) and United have made another mistake by not really getting behind Ole Gunnar Solskjær and making it obvious that Big Time Charlie players can't go crying to other influential people in the club thus undermining the manager. Mind you, if they made a bomb squad (and we all know how well that works) then Solskjær might be left having to select mainly from the U23s. Klopp and Arteta need to get a room. If Kane ever scores for Spurs again wouldn't it be wonderful for it to happen on a wet Saturday afternoon at Sutton United (apologies to any supporters of the Gas reading this) and for Conte's surging celebratory run from the dugout to end in a slip followed by the sight of him standing up with his immaculate suit caked in mud? Patrick Viera is settling into management quite well, isn't he? Intense on the touchline but relaxed in the interview (probably even more intense in the dressing room though). Similar to the decent job Jack Ross is doing at Hibernian. And perhaps Bruno Lage, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank too. | |
