Where has Harper gone ? 17:09 - Dec 13 with 2711 views | markchips | Predicted to be the next big thing he really has disappeared altogether of late unless he is injured. If he is the' beast' he makes out he is , he could have filled in at left back the last few weeks and shown us how great he was.
Where has Harper gone ? on 17:14 - Dec 13 with 2645 views | kizaitfc | He is big example of how difficult it is to get it right in one transfer window. Most people looked at Evans and Harper in the summer and thought that is a hell of a midfield. Unfortunately they just haven't lived up to the expectation and you slowly start to see why they are playing in league 1. In order to really become a force we need to be looking for signings like Edmundson and Burns. Real hard working players who don't think they can just walk it in league 1.

If we persist with 4-4-2 I think he would do well next to Morsy. Always seems a bit lightweight though, not quite the ‘beast’ he described himself as.

If anyone read the WBA forum after Harper signed, their fans were all in agreement with the type of player he was. Good potential, but lacked concentration and was unable to complete 90 mins without drifting out of games. It seems that’s exactly how he’s been since he arrived.

…and of course Ashton has strong links with WBA, s9 quite possibly and Ashton target?

Where has Harper gone ? on 19:27 - Dec 13 with 2048 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Really not sure about the left back suggestion. He has struggled as an inexperienced player in a team that is struggling. That should be no surprise. A new manager coming in will change things (especially formation and tactics) and Harper can only hope this suits him. If the team starts playing well, he will probably be a completely different player. The same may well be true of Edwards.

Where has Harper gone ? on 19:32 - Dec 13 with 2021 views | tractorshark | I said the other day there’s a real talent there but he needs good coaching and patience. Out of all our midfielders, he’s the one who is the most comfortable on the ball and capable of retaining possession. Unfortunately he’s also capable of dozing off and making mistakes. But he reminds of Trevoh Chalobah. Raw and naive but with plenty of talent to be nurtured. I genuinely think Harper could be a top player for us in a year or two.

Some games will have shown (Lincoln away in particular) that he can have a going forward intention. Could be a good supplier for both strikers when using this formation.

Only time will tell. Different players but who knows. JET was supremely gifted, I remember watching him destroy us for Doncaster but he never had the attitude or aptitude to fulfil his potential. Harper is decent but it depends on who gets hold of him and whether he’s willing to put in the hard yards and learn his trade.
Where has Harper gone ? on 20:57 - Dec 13 with 1638 views | Swansea_Blue | Predicted by who? Andre Dozzell had a far better youth/age group pedigree. There’s even more hype around Louie Barry and he’s struggled to break into the age groups for Ireland. We’re feeding on scraps with this lot in the hope of catching someone when they mature enough to step up. Nothing wrong with that in principle at our level I suppose, but there’ll be a lot more missed than hits.

You’ve lost me. I didn’t say Harper was lazy or had a bad attitude. I think we have a decent player there but only time will tell. It is up to him to work hard and hopefully learn off the right manager, coaches and experienced players.

The lesson of Dozzell is "don't pan young players who are learning the game in a poor team", surely?

The trouble with persisting with 442 (which I didn't think looked great at Wigan anyway) is where do you play Celina? He's our most creative player and has created far more chances than anyone else if you look at the stats. He's also scored and assisted a decent amount. SB

Indeed, that's part of the indictment against Cook. He maybe realised he had got his midfield wrong, hence the arrival of Morsy. Sadly, that didn't quite work either. Agree it's hard to get everything right in one window when you're recruiting a whole squad, but he had more than enough budget to cover a few mistakes e.g. he wasn't happy with his keeper choice, so he brought in Walton, who was a huge upgrade. The contrast with Wigan, where Richardson brought in 17 new players, mostly on free transfers, is harsh. They've had almost as much upheaval as Town but look organised and a team. Put a solid full back behind him and play him off one of the flanks - it worked in the Championship in 2017/18

There in lies the key reason why Cook failed, lack of a solid fullback - on the left. I attribute Cook's failure mostly down to how crap recruitment was on the back line - although Chambers was past L1 standard, we should have replaced him and bolstered LB better than we did, and sooner than we did. Yes we loaned Coulson - but way way too late into the window. [Post edited 14 Dec 2021 12:08]

Once we added Walton, we had Edmundson, who's looking good plus Burgess, who is adequate. Yes, full back has looked a weakness & Donacien became a regular despite not fitting Cook's 4-2-3-1, which needs full backs who get forward.
