Before kick-off yesterday we were 11th, 10 points off 6th place who had a game in hand on us.
After winning yesterday, we are 11th, 10 points off 6th who have a game in hand on us.
We are going to need a phenomenal run over the second half of this season to make the play-offs. It would be an achievement on the same scale as Mick keeping us up when he came in.
The problem is, it is not about gaining 10 points, it is about doing 10 points better than teams who have already shown they can perform better than we have been over the course of 22 matches. It is not unreasonable to say we need 44 points from those 22 matches. That is immediately switching from mid-table form to automatic promotion form and sustaining it.
I think it's impossible to predict how the season will end with the current Omicron situation as it is, given no-one knows how that itself may pan out tbh.
In "normal" times it might be conceivable that a club thinking it was out of promotion contention could relax, enjoy themselves & climb the table remarkably, but you'd need a fair bit of luck for that too, and by & large we're not really a "lucky" club are we?!

That is exactly the problem. We need to win at least 75% of our remaining games and hope many other teams stumble. It’s not impossible but I would be willing to risk precisely zero dollars on it.

It's not impossible in the same way that it isn't impossible that England will win both of the last two Ashes tests. Or that nodge will stay up in the Premier League. Or that we will sign Gio Dos Santos in January.

It's a possible long shot on paper, but given the potential of the players we have here and the new manager effect, we probably have more capacity for a significant and sustained improvement than most of our competitors would have in this situation, so I wouldn't rule it out at all. If this lot start really believing in themselves they could do it.
Imho, it’s on a par with still believing in fairies/Santa/Brexit benefits. All highly unlikely, there’s no evidence for any of them, yet smoke enough and you never know...

It is unbelievable how many people still think it is possible.
No wonder there were so many still thinking we should not have sacked Cook. They are not based in reality at all.
You never know, we could go on a run and with 22 games left that’s a lot of points to play for. But I think it more realistic to just hope for improvement and see where it takes us.
My prediction is 8th place and my hope is that the basics are there for a competitive team next year.

I can’t think of a better reason why people were wedded to Cook other than a reluctance to see how bad we were doing under him. Surely once we faltered in that run of games against the top sides in early December, everyone must have realised this season was finished?
Not that we should give up of course. It’s time for cliches: take every game at a time and see where we end up. We are fkd this season though.

Strictly speaking, we can make the playoffs, with half a season remaining. It is one heck of an ask and requires a lot of things to go our way. But it is possible.
So I have to post yes.
Do I think it likely? Not very. But with a bright young manager, a talented squad and a renewed feeling of energy about the club, who knows ...

Of course it’s possible as long as it’s mathematically possible. In the same way that it’s possible I’ll have a threesome with Martine McCutcheon and Mick Mills as long as we all live (I’ve got an ‘m’ fetish, what can I say 🤷â€â™‚ï¸).
I doubt either of us would bet anything on either outcome though.

And you'll have probably changed your mind in 11, 12, 13, and 14, etc games time...
Probably. If you're 3 points behind but then go 6 it looks worse. Then if you win again and results go your way your back to 3 and it looks better. So yeah situations and thoughts change, unlike your tiresome up arrow attempt posts.

Stranger things have happened - still half a season to go.

I'll let you know in 10 games time.
The obvious test was when we played 5(?) teams in the PO places in a run of 6 games in late November to early December. That was always going to tell us whether our form against the more lowly teams was meaningful in the promotion race. It wasn’t. We don’t need another 10 games, the gap is too large already (unless we go on a long winning streak out of nowhere).

Not impossible, but it isn't going to happen.
I'll take dos Santos ripping up league 1.

I'd say us getting into the playoffs this season is not even that far fetched. If the squad start regularly putting in performances like yesterday, like we've been expecting them to produce from the start of the season, then we will beat a lot of the teams in this division.

You've got more chance with Michelle McManus and Mick McCarthy!
