What we know is that it’ll be extremely hard to do. The only way is if the US does most of it and I see it’s already committed further troop numbers to Eastern Europe and a couple of squadrons of F35s to the U.K. The problem is that the European countries have under invested in their military for years and there is little capability. I suspect a lot of it is smoke and mirrors talk and it won’t happen for a long time.

It’s time for Europe to do some lifting of its own and get serious about its own collective defence. That includes the U.K. after 10 years of defence cuts. It’s no good Johnson dribbling on about the U.K. spending the bare minimum of 2% GDP and being proud of it when it’s going to need more than that in the new world. As for the Europeans for many, 2% is an aspiration.

It’s doable and time is of the essence.

It’s quite notable that the “both sides”, “yeah but NATO” folks who cropped up at the outbreak have been somewhat quiet lately. Perhaps the realisation has dawned, that Putins Russia are actually a bellicose nation who committed an unprovoked invasion followed by countless atrocities.

NATO has thus far limited Putins expansionism and as Sweden and Finland have shown, NATO’s presence as a defensive pact is totally justified. The views of Corbyn at al on NATO have aged horribly.
