And, like now, there was a surge on demand for hospital beds.

It wasn’t so much the extreme temperature we are getting at the moment, but the duration, which was months. Here is a summary. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_British_Isles_heat_wave Personally, I had a really good summer that year.

You're missing the point. If you died in those days you just got on with things. None of this bedwetting nonsense when you died in them days.

I was a couple of years older and can remember very hot days in the back garden, with the screaming of the swifts. Can also remember the summer phenomenon of great plumes of smoke around the countryside from stubble burning and the smell of ash on the breeze. While spectacular, probably good that has disappeared.

Exactly. Nowadays when people die they are straight onto Twitter to moan about it the bloody snowflakes. Really selfish of them to bang on about their own demise when people just want to follow Love Island.

I was just into my teens and remember that my cricket ‘square’ in the garden went completely bare - much to fathers annoyance. Not a blade of green anywhere. I also had those girlie saddles with a strap over the top - the soles melted when I was fishing, and my feet got a wonderful patterned sunburn. Plus side was that there were no water meters on the farm in lived on and we had the hose on all day on the veg patch (and in the paddling pool - no fancy garden swimming pools in those days) so there’s was always water to cool down in. Plus I was a kid without a care in the world. Wonderful days.

I would have been five too. Memories of my dad finishing the building of our new home at the weekends, whilst I amused myself on the building site. Not sure this would be allowed to happen now.
