Squad size and selection watch! (again..) 11:26 - Sep 12 with 1328 viewsunstableblue

Its time for yet another one of those what is the preferred set of matchday players (don't think you can say preferred 11 anymore)

I had this for tomorrow night:

-------------------Walton
-------Doanicien-Wolf-Edmundson
Burns--------Morsy---Evans----Leif
------------Chaplin-----Harness
---------------Ladapo

Subs: Hladky, KVY, Burgess, Leigh, Ball, JJ, Ahadme
Which mean Keogh, Edwards, Camara, Humphreys, and Jackson miss out completely

As stated on another post I think you'll start seeing two defenders, two mids (one deep, one forward) and two attackers being the go to bench.

Here is our squad by position yet again:

-------------------Walton (Hladky/Hayes)
----------Donacien, Wolf, Edmundson (Keogh, Burgess)
Burns (KVY, Edwards)-----------------------Davis (Leigh)
--------------------Morsy, Evans (Ball, Camara, Humphreys)
-------------Chaplin, Harness (Aluko (injured), Jackson)
---------------------------Ladapo (JJ, Ahadme)

If you ignore Hayes and an injured Aluko.. that's 5 GOOD outfield players missing on matchdays completely... which becomes challenging.. Camara and Ahadme must be quite far up the pecking order... Jackson, Edwards, Humphreys - quite peripheral?

I am someone who would always have Edwards in the squad.

Purely on the basis that he is a player who gives you something completely different. He is really the only player in his squad who does what he does.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

Success in this league - especially when teams defend deep - has to be about breaking the line, beating the man, stretching teams out of shape...

That's what McKenna seems to have really stepped up on in his training (you know what type of training it is)... I think Morsy moving into a more advanced role, and breaking the lines is a big part of that, as well as Donacien interplay and hitting the byline

I think Harness doe this to some extent, I sense Camara will bring a little.

But to your point Edwards and Burns are our only real pace, beat the man type players.. but alas I wonder if Edwards wider game is good enough?? and with Burns in the matchday squad and the players I referenced above his attributes are covered in part

I'm sure he'll continue to improve in the pizza games... but still think he's not guaranteed a league bench place

I think we’ll see Burgess at LCB if fit and available. We look better for it.

Also think we might see Keogh sooner rather than later too, probably for Woolfenden. Harsh on Woolfenden but important we manage the load and get others up to speed just like we’ve tried to do everywhere else in the team.

We shouldn’t read too much into the Northampton game but Keogh’s simple, accurate passes through the middle would be quite the weapon in league games where most teams have already been trying to press high up on us and stop us playing the ball out. Keogh is probably the best suited and most assured to get us playing the right way out from the back and successfully getting the ball through the press.

I’ve not seen Keogh, but I do think that Woolfenden adds a lot when he carries the ball quickly forcing one of the opposition to come out and challenge him. He is 10 years younger than Keogh, who has to be considered as a short term signing.

Not sure maths is your strong point. Check your figures again.

Is it 5 quality outfield players missing out each week? 6 when Aluko returns?

23 - 18 = 5

Strongly suspect we may not see much of Fridge for now.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I have no idea why people seem so determined to rip up the defence that has kept so many clean sheets under KM. Added to that they are so pivotal in the way we play offensively too.

On your subs mix of two defenders, two mids and two attackers - think we have lots of flexbility now e.g. Ball on the bench can cover defensive midfielder or drop into the back 3/4. KVY and Leigh can play as wingbacks or drop inside into a 3. Jackson can be an attacker or replace Burns. It allows McK lots of flexibility to mix up the bench options dependent on the opposition.

No-one is ripping it up. We’ve actually got a solid system where players can come in like Burgess and slot in comfortably.

I think Keogh has different strengths and weaknesses to Woolfenden. It’s no sleight on Woolfenden to play someone with the experience, pedigree and ability of Keogh in certain games as well as to make sure players stay fit enough and involved enough to step up when they will be needed.
