Bankers bonuses 22:57 - Sep 20 with 934 viewsquirkie

Hands up who is in favour of unlimited bonuses so that the rest of us will have a nice warm glow that this will help the economy?

Come on, Tories are taking the mick now and just want to lose the next election and let Labour pick up the mess.

The big question is though, which side of Labour are we on, the blue or red?

To be honest it doesn't make a great deal of difference as there are other ways to structure compensation payments. However, the real point is that Truss is talking about the competitiveness of the city without mentioning the enormous act of self-harm perpetuated by her party over the last six years.

Don't get distracted by the detail, get back to the main point.

By “the main point”, I assume you’re talking about her intention to overturn planned bans on the imports of foie gras and animal fur?

I can see this going pear shaped very quickly. She’s pursuing potentially dangerous economic policies (according to many) AND a deeply unpopular ones. I wonder what will break first - the country or the support for the Tories?

So...speaking candidly - and as a banker in the city - the bonus limits just led to increased standard compensation packages. Do not be fooled in to thinking every banker was on mega bucks though. Bonuses for the majority of staff were in line with what maybe some of the John Lewis "associates" were receiving pre COVID. They are not astronomical amounts. That said, at the higher echelons, rotation is swift and for banks to attract the best talent they need to dangle a decent carrot (think premier league carrot dangling as a comparison).
It is very easy to steer the narrative to put the blame on bankers when in actual fact a large number of bankers are really working hard to stabilize the economy whilst dealing with increase levels of negative equity as a direct result of Tory manifesto failings and lack of attention.

Yes, so much is so obvious already. I posted Rafael Behr's piece today on another thread but he clearly does too:
