According to the experts on 07:47 - Oct 9 with 3966 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | In fairness to them, that seems to be the narrative in the press (I.e McKenna has coached a team of average L1 players superbly). Obviously we know from the inside that lacks any context. The thing is you could be the best coach in the world, but if the players don’t have a certain level of technical ability, or footballing intelligence, they aren’t going to be effective with the system, or excelling to the level we are at.
According to the experts on 07:57 - Oct 9 with 3892 views | xrayspecs | We have recruited players who either have played championship or higher (Walton, Morsy, Mass, Broady, Williams, Ball, Clarke, Evans, Edmundson, Taylor, Aluko, Tuanzebe, Chaplin, Davis) or you believe could (Omari, Hirst). Add in some home grown players who you believe could step up - Wolfy, Humphreys and Elkan.
According to the experts on 08:00 - Oct 9 with 3867 views | tonybied | That's fine, let people keep writing us off as over achievers. Teams will keep coming here thinking that we'll be easy to beat as we've just been lucky so far and we will just keep consistantly rolling them over. I think the second half of this season will be when things get a little tougher for us, when teams have played us and realised we're no flash in the pan.

Agreed, and it's to McKenna's credit that he has seen in players things that others haven't. Kayden Jackson springs to mind when it comes to an existing player, but players like Leif Davis and George Hirst are also examples. He clearly has an idea of the way he wants us to play, and has gone about assembling a squad accordingly, knowing that it would work at this level. [Post edited 9 Oct 2023 8:03]

According to the experts on 08:07 - Oct 9 with 3796 views | HighgateBlue | It's the only argument they have left when they have many millions more than us to spend and still come up short. Still, I don't consider it a stinging criticism. Football is a team game. We have a good team. Whether those same players would excel in a different team is not something I really care about. The individual components don't matter when the whole is working well. If we had a striker who scored 30 goals all with his right foot - I wouldn't care that his left foot's no good! There's something in what they say - we have a great coach, it stands to reason that we wouldn't be doing quite so well if we did not have a great coach. But that's as far as it goes. It also shows a misunderstanding of how a player can be "Good", and of how the different divisions function. Professional football is not a video game where everyone has a rating for shooting, passing, dribbling etc. For some players, they can actually excel better in a higher division than a lower one, because the opponents are playing a different game, or at least playing it differently. In one sense, they're exactly wrong - we had championship players in league one, not league one players in the championship.
According to the experts on 08:08 - Oct 9 with 3778 views | ArnieM | Well Ipswich Town FC do their talking on the pitch and in the league, not in the media which is where all scum do their “talking”……. BRING IT ON!

According to the experts on 08:12 - Oct 9 with 3728 views | MattinLondon | It wasn’t that long ago, those experts were dismissing KM as a someone simply living off the Man Utd tag. KM is a brilliant tactician and he has made good players better. But none of them are average L1 players.

According to the experts on 08:27 - Oct 9 with 3604 views | Herbivore | They clearly aren't average League 1 players so that's just silly. Every one of our starting XI and bench would walk into the first team of any League 1 side. If they'd said average or unproven Championship players that would be closer to the mark. You'd think Norwich of all people, getting promoted through the goals of lower league clogger Grant Holt, might know that a team can be much greater than the sum of its parts and far more effective than it might look on paper alone.

Our average players with the third best start ever in the Championship. We're only beaten by current Leicester (annoyingly) and 05/06 Sheff Utd.

I wondered if they viewed their own team, that came up from L1, that went on to get promotion, as average L1 players. They had a effective unit that worked well… just as we have. Which is far more important than individual class/skill. Sealing promotion with a win a CR will be wonderfully sweet (a bit early I know, but hey)

According to the experts on 08:57 - Oct 9 with 3325 views | franz_tyson | What's the problem.... more chance we quietly go under the radar accumulating points and bigger clubs leave our L1 quality players alone. Let them keep talking us down.
According to the experts on 09:10 - Oct 9 with 3162 views | Guthrum | Good coaching brings out latent quality in players. Especially when filled with confidence and utilised to their strengths, rather than jammed into someone's ideological framework. Probably helps that they are fully up to speed with the system - theory and practice - as you can tell from what they say in interviews. Based on their prior careers, many of our squad would not be expected to excel like they have been. McKenna and the ITFC setup (including squad togetherness) has allowed them to realise their potential. Not temporarily, either - loaned out and released players continue to shine at their new clubs. Perhaps it might be more accurate to say that they are quality players who haven't been enabled to flourish previously.
