Presumably thought he was too young for the role.

I’m not sure. He’s getting on a bit these days - must be at least 33. (What a bizarre period that was).

TWTD. He still turned in one of the best performances I’ve ever seen from a town player and scored what’s probably still my favourite Town goal.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Odd to say, but he was just too good for our team at the time.

I remember watching a pre season friendly at Bristol City, where his runs and through balls were on a different level to those around him.

I also rated Matteo Sereni during the same period, purely because he single-handedly rescued that unbeaten home record against Helsingborg.

For some strange reason, I’m ridiculously proud of that record of never losing a home leg in European competition, mainly because I saw so many great nights under the floodlights against excellent Italian, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and Polish sides.

Also some crackers against Norwegian, Swedish and Greek sides where we ran riot.

I think you're right. We seemed to lose our balance as a team that season and a big disparity in skill between players could well have been why.
