Williams Set to Complete Deal
Williams Set to Complete Deal

Town will receive £100,000 from Bristol City for midfielder Gavin Williams, according to reports this morning. The Welshman is expected to complete his move to the Robins today, the fee and personal terms having been agreed and Williams having undergone a medical at Ashton Gate yesterday.

Early reports suggested the Blues had made a profit on the £300,000 they paid West Ham for the former Hereford man in January 2006, however, that seemed unlikely given the player's injury-hit spell at Portman Road.

Elsewhere, former goalkeeper-coach Malcolm Webster is due back at Southampton today after his summer break and is likely to be told he is surplus to requirements at St Mary's. Town are believed to be interested in re-appointing the ex-Cambridge United keeper to the role he left in 2004.

New Southampton head coach Jan Poortvliet has already axed former Town assistant boss John Gorman and Jason Dodd from the Saints' coaching staff.

Boss Jim Magilton is close to gaining his UEFA A Licence, having been awarded the B Licence a year ago. The Town manager is currently on the course but took time away to attend the start of pre-season training yesterday.

Magilton said: "There is a lot of studying involved but I am getting there and it's important to get the qualifications now as soon as possible.”

The Blues boss says he is aware that there will be greater pressure on him over the coming year: "Yes, there will be lots of expectation this season. Now more than ever because of the different financial climate at the club.

"I welcome that and have to deal with any extra pressure. No one puts more pressure on me than myself and this will continue.

"Last season we were good at times but then on other days were not good enough. If we keep progressing we have a chance of fulfilling our goals this season.”

Colchester striker Kevin Lisbie is the latest frontman to be linked with the Blues. The 29-year-old scored 17 goals for the U's during last year's relegation season and despite pledging his future to the League One side looks likely to be on his way over the summer.

The ex-Norwich loanee, who started his career with Charlton, is best remembered by Town fans for a dive which led to Sito being shown a red card during the Portman Road derby in the 2005/06 season, a dismissal which was overturned on appeal.

Town are looking for a frontman in addition to a goalkeeper – who seems more and more likely to be Richard Wright – and a left-back before the season starts.

The Blues have ruled themselves out of the race to sign Manchester City's Emile Mpenza, while Shola Ameobi appears likely to join another Town target Kevin Phillips at West Brom next season. The Blues have also enquired about Crewe's promising young striker Nicky Maynard.

Elsewhere, Rangers midfielder Alan Gow, linked with Town on several occasions over the years, is in talks with Norwich City with a fee of £300,000 having been agreed between the two clubs. Gow recently turned down a move to Burnley.
