Scottish reports claim the Blues could make renewed moves to sign Rangers left-back Stevie Smith in January. Town are said to have previously made unsuccessful approaches for the former Scotland U21 international.

Smith has reportedly been told he has no future at Ibrox after coming back from a pelvic injury which had sidelined him for the best part of two years. The Bellshill-born player, who is contracted until 2010, made only two senior appearances last season and is currently training with the reserves.

The 5ft 10in tall full-back, who has previously received full Scotland calls but is yet to win a cap, made his debut for Rangers back in 2004/05 and has made 46 starts and four sub appearances, scoring one goal.

Town are short of cover at full-back with David Wright, primarily a right-sided player, currently occupying the left-back berth due to Ben Thatcher's injury.

Alex Bruce, more a central defender than a full-back and possibly on his way in the transfer window, was recently utilised at right-back during Moritz Volz's absence, so it would not be a surprise if Jim Magilton was to look for another wide defender in January.

Meanwhile, Magilton has admitted that former Blue Darren Ambrose, who faces Town tonight with Charlton, is on his list of potential signings. The Town boss was first linked with a move for Ambrose back in November 2007.

Magilton says the midfielder, who is out of contract next summer, is definitely amongst his targets: "He is probably on a list of players we would like.

"He is a very good player who probably left here too soon and we were robbed of seeing a few more years of him here.

"I always thought he was going to be a top player but things have not quite panned out for him.

"When he lands on the ball you think things are going to happen - he is a match-winner.”

Elsewhere, Ex-Blue Wayne Brown has joined Preston North End on loan from Hull City.
