Reserves 1-2 Watford

Scottish central defender Paul Watson netted for a young Town reserves side as they lost 2-1 at home to Watford at Playford Road this afternoon. Iván Campo, Jaime Peters and Jordan Rhodes were the only players with first team experience in the Town line-up.

The Blues were already two down when Watson scrambled in his 70th minute goal after a corner, the Watford keeper picking up an injury in the melee.

Just before half-time, the central defender had been unlucky when he deflected Michael Bryan's opening goal into the net. Liam Henderson added the second on 65.

Skipper Campo sat in front of the back four dictating play for the most part, and put in a livelier display than in previous reserves matches.

Jordan Rhodes picked up a slight knock in the second half and was replaced by Ronan Murray, who was impressive alongside fellow academy striker Connor Wickham.

Forgotten man Jaime Peters did well at right-back with youngster Seb Dunbar similarly solid in the other full-back position.

Woodbridge Town keeper Tom Ross was used in goal as he was for the U18s on Saturday. Overall, Town played well enough and were unlucky not to get a draw.

The game was watched by new Watford coach Frank Lampard senior, Crawley boss Steve Evans, ex-Colchester manager Geraint Williams, who we understand may be set for a coaching role at Luton, and former Town keeper coach Andy Rhodes, father of striker Jordan and now working at Preston.

Halfway through the game the Town first team arrived back at Playford Road after their Christmas party weekend in Dublin and began a training session overseen by fitness coach Simon Thadani.

Reserves: Ross, Peters, Watson, Ainsley, Dunbar, Reason, Upson, Campo, Murphy, Lambe (Wickham 55), Rhodes (Murray 76). Unused: Eastman, Daniels, Clemo.
