Former Celtic Striker Linked
Former Celtic Striker Linked
Thursday, 6th Aug 2009 11:50

A Dutch report is linking Town with former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The 30-year-old was released by the Bhoys at the end of last season.

The 6ft 1in tall frontman started his career at FC Twente and appeared at Portman Road in a pre-season friendly prior to Town’s 1999/00 promotion campaign.

In 1999, after five years with the Enschede club, the Oldenzaal-born player moved on to PSV. A further five years into his career the lengthily-named striker signed for Celtic for £3.4 million, shortly after Roy Keane had left Parkhead.

Since his release by Celtic, Vennegoor of Hesselink, who has been capped 27 times by Holland, scoring five goals, has been linked with numerous clubs including Blackburn, Hull City, Bristol City and Middlesbrough in the UK, Málaga in Spain and his former Dutch sides FC Twente and PSV.

The Blues are close to adding one, probably two, strikers to their squad, although earlier today manager Roy Keane said Town were speaking to clubs regarding the players they are interested in, which would not be necessary with the Dutchman as he is a free agent.

No chance, we've haven't got that many spare letter transfers to stick on a shirt. Unless he calls himself Bob.

Good scoring record, alot of bigger clubs than ITFC chasing him though.

Get this fella in now! He would destroy at this level. Is getting a bit slow, but has plenty of power, heading ability and knows where the back of the net is. Hesselink and Stead/Priskin would be enough to get the season going with a bang. Come on keano, lets make it happen before the Cov game and show the league we're serious players this year!

That is more like it. Rather than chase Murphy who has turned Town down twice now. Why chase a player who does not want to play for the club.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink could definitely be the 20 goals a season striker that we desperately need.

What about Kevin Phillips as a possible Town striker?

He is at Birmingham in the Prem and will not get to play this year, which is what happened when he went up with WBA a couple of seasons ago. He certainly is a PROVEN goalscorer and has a couple of good seasons left in him. Certainly at Championship level anyway.

John Vinegar of Kitchen Sink would be a really good signing for us. Saw a lot of him up here in Scotland and he'd do a good job for us at Championship level. Dont see it happening though. I reckon he sees himself playing in the top division of whichever country he ends up playing in next season.

This guy is really good on Champ Manager. Worth a punt! Priskin, J of V and Gio = Premiership.......not realistic but lets hope!

TBH, am surprised we have not been linked with him earlier. Would be sensational at this level, and RK know him but I fear there will be bigger clubs after him. A bit surprised he hasn't been snapped up already

Seems like we're unanimous about Vennegoor of Hesselink, I'd like to see him sign too. It's not like he's 33 or 34, 30 is not a bad age at all especially for someone of his pedigree. Fingers crossed.

Hell yes - I thought we should take a shot at him when I heard he was released. Sounds like he'd do a damn good job for us.

Please please sign him RK!!!! Looking at our 'promotion' rivals they all seem to have at least 1 decent striker, vgoh and priskin would be a superb strike force with the likes of Walters, counago and stead in the wings would be great! Relativley happy with the midfield defence isn't bad and personally think we've got one of the best keepers in the ccc. Roll on Sunday, anybody know how many tickets have been sold for cov?

He would be a great signing, nice to see us linked with a big name (not just the length) and at 30 he could have the best seasons around the corner. He certainly is Premiership standard and so he should score plenty of goals at Championship level. Not sure if he would be the 20+ goal striker we need but certainly worth snapping him up.

Priskin, J V of H and Gio would be a bit of a dream team!

I think it is more likely to be Murphy and Priskin though.
