Former Celtic Striker Linked
Former Celtic Striker Linked
Thursday, 6th Aug 2009 11:50

A Dutch report is linking Town with former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The 30-year-old was released by the Bhoys at the end of last season.

The 6ft 1in tall frontman started his career at FC Twente and appeared at Portman Road in a pre-season friendly prior to Town’s 1999/00 promotion campaign.

In 1999, after five years with the Enschede club, the Oldenzaal-born player moved on to PSV. A further five years into his career the lengthily-named striker signed for Celtic for £3.4 million, shortly after Roy Keane had left Parkhead.

Since his release by Celtic, Vennegoor of Hesselink, who has been capped 27 times by Holland, scoring five goals, has been linked with numerous clubs including Blackburn, Hull City, Bristol City and Middlesbrough in the UK, Málaga in Spain and his former Dutch sides FC Twente and PSV.

The Blues are close to adding one, probably two, strikers to their squad, although earlier today manager Roy Keane said Town were speaking to clubs regarding the players they are interested in, which would not be necessary with the Dutchman as he is a free agent.

bluelad, I can't imagine whoever updates the spurs site would know about him coming to Ipswich before anyone else. Gio is way to good for us, He is more likely to go to somewhere like Deportivo or Wolves/Burnley/Hull etc.

Maybe but maybe if you are going on loan somewhere, then maybe he liked it here, it's not like we didn't like him is it, we loved him. Come on Gio - Let's be having you!! Urr....sounded like someone else then [spits feathers!]

Would love to have him here he still has a few years left in him at the top level but would think a 'bigger' club will come in for him offering a better wage

Jan Venables of Heffalump would be a cracking signing! 2 year deal, lovely jubbly. I never considered Gio coming back, but it would be great, especially if Martin gets injured before Civelli comes back.

Along with other posters, I would be happy with JVOH, Priskin and Gio.

it would be great if gio would come back but i dont think he will , he would probably prefer a move back to spain or a premiership club. jvog would be a good signing but i can see wolves or someone going for him and there is the matter of the wages.

Would like to see this player in an Iswich shirt, although I would imagine being 30 he's got a couple of years left in him at the top so I doubt it will happen, especially as he's being linked with Premier League side, but fingers crossed.
His goal scoring record is good, so I think he would be the so called 20 goal a season striker we are all talking about.

This guy is a quality striker, had a good record at Celtic. I think he would have still been there under Strachan. Sign him and Dos Santos on loan again - forget Murphy!

Town linked with every spare player going, plus a few that aren't, by increasingly desperate transfer-crunched media.
