Brian Murphy Has Town Medical
Brian Murphy Has Town Medical

TWTD understands that Bohemians goalkeeper Brian Murphy was at Portman Road for a medical yesterday and will join the Blues when the Irish season ends in November. TWTD first revealed Town’s interest in the former Manchester City and Swansea keeper a week ago.

Murphy is set to sign a pre-contract agreement with the Blues which will see him join the squad in November when his Bohemians contract ends, formalising the deal when the transfer window reopens in January.

Both Town and Sunderland are reported to have dismissed yesterday afternoon’s claims that Black Cats striker Daryl Murphy is to join the Blues and it may well be that that story was a result of confusion regarding which Murphy has been at the club this week.

Coincidentally, Brian and Daryl Murphy are both 26-years-old and hail from Waterford.

Goalkeeper Murphy started his career in England with Manchester City, during which time he spent spells on loan at Oldham and Peterborough. While at London Road, he made his first senior appearance in his only game for the Posh.

In 2003, after three years at Eastlands, Murphy moved on to Swansea, where he made 18 appearances before returning to Ireland in 2007.

Capped by the Republic of Ireland at U19, U20 and U21 levels, the 6ft 1in tall keeper has been tipped for senior international honours. In 2008 he was named the FAI League of Ireland Player of the Year.

While Town already have two goalkeepers, the Blues may be keen to send Shane Supple out on loan to gain further first team experience, in which case cover would be required.

Town are also looking to sign Bohemians midfielder Gary Deegan, who was first linked with the Blues late last month. Deegan is also out of contract at the end of the Irish season, but compensation would be due to Bohs and to his former club Shelbourne for the 21-year-old under FIFA rules.

I'm just pleased that it's not Daryl Murphy. I wasn't overly pleased to hear he may be signing.

I agree with dobbie73 and manic-blue he's clearly just back up. Always good to have cover!

Well said Manic_Blue, you cant plan to go through a full championship season with just 2 keepers, even if the two we have are good quality. Injury, suspension or unforeseen circumstances do happen. I dont fancy seeing us play an outfield player in goal if situations go against us. Also glad it wasnt Daryl Murphy, the guy obviously doenst want to play for us, because if he did he would have signed when we were in for him first time round.

mickswich,

So Supple can go out on loan, maybe?

WE DO DON'T NEED ANOTHER KEEPER! THIS MUST BE THE 3RD SEASON IN A ROW WHERE POOR OLD SUPPLE HASN'T BEEN GIVEN A CHANCE!

Tractor boy olly, thats exactly why we're bringing one in. To let Supple go out and get games instead of benchwarming. To go out and improve! There's no way he's going to replace Wright as a first team keeper at the moment so he may aswell go out on loan where he can get games, but he can't do that without a replacement.

Any one heard the rumour a bid for Richard Wright has been accepted and now this story ? I am putting 2 plus 2 together !!!

This will be great news for Supple, because his chances are very limited having a keeper of Wright's quality in his way, a loan spell is just what he needs!!

God i'm so relieved it's Brian & not Daryl...agree,forensic_bloo,either the George & Mildred theme tune or even better, Man about the house.

rory. In my mind Supple is a perfectly good goalkeeper and sending him out to some League 2 strugglers is not going to help is cause. There is no reason why he cannot share the role as a GK with Wright and eventually he may prove Keane wrong in his decisions. Yes Wright was player of the season last season but he is another year older and Keane is the man to give players chances, as has been proven with Wickham.

Again Rk signs them because he wants them and they get my support. I don't need to know RK's plan I just want to see us getting into the premier. So get a grip boys RK runs the club not you..

Makes sense to allow Shane get first team experience on loan elsewhere. How quickly could we get him back if Wright gets a long term injury?

Yeah i agree wright is getting older, but having seen supple pre-season I dont think he's quite there yet. Untill the time comes when Wright starts to get a bit 'past best' he's not going to get games here. Supple needs to improve to a point where he can become our 1st team keeper, but in reality I think if 1st team games NOW are what he's after he'll have to go out on loan or move on at the end of his contract. If this is the case then either way, bringing in another keeper as a backup is a sensible move.

Sorry i didnt read your comment properly. Supple is getting games in matches where we're looking to rest players (IE carling cup) and may shine through and earn a place in the 1st team sharing the role with Wright. Obviously we can't see the training performances etc. so we only get glimpses of Supple, RK will have a much better idea and has shown that he will give youngsters a chance provided they show enough potential. I'd like to see him earn a place, but IMO it's going to be a while before (if) that happens.

are we sure or is this report as reliable as the other Murhpy move last night :-) personally would like to have seen Daryl Murhphy, not for his goals but ability to create....

Whats the point ? Supple is ona one year contract. If we send him on loan why give him the contract. Someone else benefits and hopefully pays his full wage but i cant see the economic sense. Then we pay this new bloke to be wrights deputy

just to clear up any confusion - it was Brian Murphy the actor out of George and Mildred and Last of the Summer Wine. I think that he passed the sodding medical ok.

Agree with other posts - the decision to bring in another keeper - in November - seems a little odd. Would have thought a centre back, loan replacement for Norris or a striker would have been a preference
