Monday, 21st Sep 2009 09:02

Football gathers to pay tribute to legendary Town boss Sir Bobby Robson later today at a memorial service at Durham Cathedral. The former England manager finally lost his long battle against cancer on July 31st, aged 76.

Members of Town’s FA and UEFA Cup-winning sides are attending, including Mick Mills, John Wark, Kevin Beattie, Allan Hunter and Paul Mariner, who is flying in from the US, where he is assistant coach at the New England Revolution. Bryan Hamilton and current coaching staff members Steve McCall and Bryan Klug are also expected at the invitation-only event, along with manager Roy Keane, chief executive Simon Clegg, former chairman David Sheepshanks and former club employees from Robson's time at Portman Road.

From elsewhere in football, Gary Lineker, Sir Alex Ferguson, who will speak at the event, Sir Bobby and Jack Charlton, Terry Venables, Steve McClaren, Sven Goran Eriksson, Graham Taylor, Sir Trevor Brooking, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and current England boss Fabio Capello are amongst those set to attend, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta and boss Pep Guardiola will be part of a delegation from the Catalan club which Robson also managed.

Welsh soprano Katherine Jenkins and Tenors Unlimited will perform at the service, which is set to be screened live by BBC News 24, Sky News and Sky Sports News.

The service, which starts at 2pm, is also being screened on the Cornhill, with footage of Robson's time in charge of the Blues preceding it from midday, while Newcastle United are also showing the service at St James’ Park.

Thank you Sir Bobby Robson.

For making my youth so enjoyable, growing up in the Northstand watching my much loved small club win the Texaco Cup,The FA Cup, UEFA Cup and for a decade become one of the dominate forces in European Football.

International teams were packed with players from ITFC through asute signings or from our wonderful yoof system.

Then you went on to give my country an unforgettable World Cup experience.

The day you died so did part of me,but you live on in our memories and with our thanks.

Sir Bobby Robson Thank You for making our dreams come true

RIP Bobby.

ITFC forever. Long live Roy Keane's new revolution, let's hope, after the teething troubles we're having, he goes on to be as successful as you were.

First time user here, who has just watched Sir Bobbys tribute and wanted to pay his respects to this great man

I started following ITFC in 1986 and so was unfortunate enough to miss out on those glory years. I still love reading/watching about those wonderful times and am still very quick to brag to people about what our football club achieved and how much we loved "our Bobby" for it.

This man put our ITFC on the footballing map and for that I will always be eternally grateful -

God bless and RIP

RIP sir bobby, you really put Ipswich on the map, not just as a good footballing town but as more. You've made Ipswich a great place. You'll forever be remembered.

IreallyamMarcusEvans thank you so much for the link, it was great to see the local news when you don't live locally. I'm sure Sir Bobby would have been very pleased with the service and the tributes at newcastle & Ipswich. Thought Gary Lineker's tribute was 'spot on' as was Sir Alex. Looking forward to Saturday's game, hope we can do him proud.

sir Bobby also gave me happy memories of my youth and blessed with awe watching Beattie, Muhren and Thysen to name but a few.

I will never forget getting off the train and the fans noise as we came up out of the underground.

Thank you Sir Bobby.
