Big Crowd for Town-Newcastle Clash
Big Crowd for Town-Newcastle Clash
Tuesday, 22nd Sep 2009 12:13

Town are expecting a crowd of around 27,000 for Saturday’s home game with Newcastle United (BBC2, from 5.05pm). So far the club has sold 25,000 tickets with Newcastle taking up the whole of their 1,800 allocation in the Cobbold Stand.

Ticket office manager John Ford told the club site: "Tickets have been selling well for the game and as well as the attraction of Newcastle coming to Portman Road, there is obviously the Sir Bobby Robson factor and the stand being renamed.

"We are closing in on 25,000 tickets sold and by kick-off on Saturday, we could have another one or two thousand on top of that.

"As always with a bigger crowd, we advise supporters to get to the game early."

If this match isn't a sell-out it'll be a shame.

Could this be the turning point in our season. I hope we put on a show that Sir Bobby Robson would be proud of.

I know he was Newcastle through and though, but Ipswich was his baby as he called us, and at least we didnt treat him like rubbish which a lot of people forget thats how Newcastle treated him when they sacked him.

I just hate how people can use grief to be hypocrites.

Come on Keano and the players do Sir Bobby proud

I agree Romeo; it really pisses me off how people seem to feel the need to grieve more than others, or claim some part of someone famous when they die by being more upset. It's very distasteful and I'm pretty certain there'd have been some PR consultant spinning Bobby's death to get NUFC some media exposure and paint themselves in a good light. As always though, at Town were dignified and appropriate.

I think you summed it up better than me Gilsey.

It was ammusing when Sheppard (Ex Newcastle Chariman) came out and said how great Sir Bobby was, yet he was quite happy to stab Sir Bobby in the back just after he had got Newcastle into Europe.

thing that annoys me is why we cant aim to get 25,000 down here every home, you can guarentee a fair few of the fans going this weekend will probably not attend anothern game this season.

I also agree with what youve said romeo

This is just the club trying to scare people into buying tickets. They did it with Leeds a few years back, there will be plenty on the day. The last time we played Toon was for Dale Roberts Memorial and what a great day that was, we got to see Bobby again, both sides played well in front of a sold out stadium. The only time I ever saw Alan Sherer play as well, a great night.

As for it being sad that so few people are coming, thats the case each and every week. If people in Ipswich cared about the team, each week would be a sellout. Instead the rest of us from far and wide make up the xtra numbers. The impression I get from people in Ipswich is most dont really dont care, and a lot of kids these days are wearing Prem shirts, which has always been a problem but it has increased since we dropped into obscurity.

ITFC85...There is a flip side to your comments, that being if some new faces are at P/R on saturday and enjoy the game then they hopefully will return on a regular basis!

If I was Keano all id do for the team talk (Apart from telling Delaney how to defend) is to stick on the 1978 FA Cup Final from the 75th Minute onwards.

I got a good feeling about the weekend

Uttlesford_ITFC you hit the nail on the head with the ammount of youngsters wearing prem football shirts.
That really annoys me. You should follow a team beacause of your roots, not beacuse of how well the team does and how famous the players (or managers) are. I was brought up an ipswich fan and will die an ipswich fan.
Could be make or break on sat for our season, a win and its game on!

I used to live in Ipswich (from the age of 6 months to a few years old)

My old man supports Ipswich and so do I its the way it should be.

I remember going to primary school in Cardiff of all places and the amount of Man Utd shirts etc was pretty disgusting.

I think you can tell a lot about a person on what team they support.

I hate plastic glory chasing supporters

yeah Depressed you are right, hopefully it will bring in a few new faces, but my gut feeling is it probably wont.....but ive got a feeling that this is a game we'll win and kick start our season

Ha! I make fun of anyone over 16 who supports a Premiership team from outside of that teams area. Theres nothing sadder than a 45 year old from Cambridge who supports Manchester United.

Lets all hope that the match is sell out and the game is played in the spirit that Sir Bobby would love. I hope we can kick start our season with a great result but in a way i'm hoping for a four all draw with a footballing spectacle fitting of Sir Bobby's memory. I'm sure he will be watching with great pride.
come on you Blues.

My experience is that some distant big club fans are some of the most unsecure people I know. They seem to revel in the fact the club wins week after week and believe it makes them a "winner" for it.

It amused me a few years ago when Chelsea won the Premier and compared to Man Utd hardly anybody turned up for the open top bus parade. A few years on and of course everyone seems to support Chelsea and they now regard themselves as a big club.

You cannot enjoy the highs if you cannot enjoy the lows, even though with the start we've had I'd prefer mid-table.

BTW Uttlesford_ITFC I grew up in Sheffield but support Town. My old man is from Felixstowe and hence the connection. He just couldn't bare to take me to see another team.

Don't want to be kill-joy, I really hope that Saturday will be a brilliant occasion, great that Sir Bobby is revered by so many, but.... I'm a bit worried that the Geordies will hijack this occasion as theirs. You must have noticed that the 'big club biased' news has all been about the people of Newcastle and their tributes and the Town has often been an afterthought. No offence to the Geordies, and as I said to my mate from Newcastle (who loved the man) WE had Sir Bobby for thirteen years, won two major trophies and he left as a hero, still idolised. Newcastle had him for four/five years and sacked him!
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad and not surprised that so many people have been touched in some way by the great man and he will be remembered appropriately, I'm just worried that that the statue, and surrounding area will be all black and white on Saturday as the BBC are in town and they'll go on about how great the Geordies are and how much they cared.
Sorry about this rant - believe it or not, I AM looking forward to what will be a great memorial to a great man.

Unfortunately can not be at the game this weekend, have to be selective of the games i can get to these days, so am grateful to the Beeb for the coverage.

Back in the day however when I was lucky enough to be a regular , I would always look forward to a Toon fixture.

My all time favourite was our 91-92 promotion season when we came back from behind twice to win 3-2 and go 10 points clear at the top and all but seal our promotion. To top it off that was the first time my dad allowed me to go in the North stand (the last season it was terraced) and the atmosphere was incredible.

Not a very current post but what a great day (& season) that was.

I'm not wanting to hijack this thread but there has been some serious generalising of Newcastle fans in here. Bobby first and foremost was from the North East.....he was a footballing man and he brought the good times back to Newcastle (for a short period of time).

There was quite strong feeling amongst the Newcastle fans at the time that Bobby had lost the dressing room with the likes of Bellamy and Dyer running amok. Ultimately is was missing out on CL football in his last full season that paved the way for his exit.

Nobody is trying to trump your grief.......Gilesy, I would say that you are doing exactly what you are accusing the Newcastle fans of doing.

Bobby was a great man and a well respected man..............Saturdays game should be about remembering him for the man he was, not about which fans have the right to be most upset.

Remember aswell that you have to play at St James' and there is nothing I would like to see more than a sea of blue and white left in rememberance of the great man

All the best.....a toon fan

I have to agree wiyh you - I know the most important thing is to remember Sir Bobby first and foremost - but have felt all along that the media have looked at the NUFC angle primarily - or is this me being petty ?

We will all miss Sir Bobby whether you are an Ipswich Fan, Newcastle Fan or a lover of the game. He will always be remembered!!! The most important thing is to make sure Portman road is absolutely rocking this saturday with Blue/Black/White to send him off in the way he would have wanted... I for one will be singing until my throat bleeds!!!

This is a match when the world will be watching lets do him proud!!!
