Town Sign Portsmouth Keeper
Town Sign Portsmouth Keeper
Wednesday, 14th Oct 2009 19:27

Town have signed Portsmouth keeper Asmir Begovic on a three-month loan. The 22-year-old is a Bosnian international, having previously played for Canadian youth teams alongside Jaime Peters.

Begovic has made only five starts and one sub appearance since joining Pompey’s academy in 2003.

During his time at Fratton Park, Begovic has spent time on loan with Belgian side La Louvière, Macclesfield, Bournemouth and Yeovil.

Having played U17 and U20 international football with Canada, the country where he was brought up, 6ft 5in tall Begovic recently committed to playing for Bosnia, the nation of his birth, making his debut as a sub at the weekend.

Begovic will provide competition for Richard Wright and second choice Arran Lee-Barrett, who is on a short-term contract until January.

Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy is set to join the Blues on a Bosman at the end of the Irish season in November, but won't be able to play competitive games until the transfer window opens in January.

Why are we "re-shaping" our "defence" in mid-october?...shouldn't Mr Roy have done that between May & August?...In Keane I certainly don't trust.

The Irish keeper in coming in Novenmber but he can not play until January. Lee Barret is on a short term loan this bloke who perhaps is a lot better is back up until January.

To sign another striker on loan... I'm not sure it will happen. RK having placed all his bets on Murphy and failed to get him - he then paid all that money for Priskin. So, by bringing in another striker, it would be admitting he got it wrong. In Stead and Counago - who I cannot believe he wanted rid of - we have two decent Championship players. Walters he likes, and he puts in a decent shift every game. Then we have the so far hapless Priskin, who I think RK will give enough time to. And even though I think he looks poor - to give the guy more time would be both fair and prudent. Add to the mix Connor Wickham. Thus, I doubt we'll add a striker.

Seeing as we have only 4 CB's - I realise that David Wright has played there, but I'm not counting him - and McAuley was out of favour at one time, we are seriuosly struggling in that position. Bruce is poor at best. Smith & Pim are learning the game and aren't ready, yet. Therefore, another CB who is big, experienced and assured would for me be the best thing he could do. Don't rule out Sol!

Getting a keeper - and a big lad at that - can't be a bad thing. Every team needs 3 keepers - fact. The boy Murphy looks like he's coming in and the new lad can put pressure on Wrighty and provide cover until Murphy arrives and can play, which is January. Competition for places - no bad thing.

I wish you lot would keep off Wrighty's back, he's been a blooming good servant to the club, went off to try & improve himself and it didn't work out, came back and apart from a couple of howlers (with a comical defence in front of him) has been one of the best squad players. As I've said before great shot stopper, poor on crosses, always has been, but then he's having to come for stuff cause he cant trust the defence. Don't mind another keeper coming in but where the hell are the rest of the needed players.........Whhooosh Tumbleweed
In Keane I do not trust.

I think we are all forgetting one minor point,, it's nice to bring a new face in too challenge Richard Wright in goal, however, last season if we remember Wrighty was having a bit of a shocker at the start again and everyone began saying get him out, however magilton stuck with him and he became one of the players of the season for me so I think give him a chance and Richard will come good.

Also I hope we get a new centre back in very quickly and a full back as I think with a brushed up defence, the midfielders, (especially leadbitter, Edwards and Jonny Walters) will have more freedom to provide the strikers with class balls through and I believe we can kick on as the midfield won't have to get back as often because the defence will be a rock. With this service I think we should stick with Priskin and Pablo up front with stead on the bench as cover and I think they will do the business. Priskin will come good, mark my words on that, let's get behind the super blues and keano now and kick start this season with a win on Saturday.

I suspect this has as much to do with Pompey preparing for David James' move to Spurs in January as it does Wrighty. They need an up-to-speed keeper and Wrighty needs a break.

RW is a good keeper. He can be criticised for his handling of crosses, as can most keepers - even those who keep goal for England....
But please bear in mind that a keeper does not work in isolation - and Richard has not had what you would call a strong defense infront of him of late. If it were up to me (and thankfully it's not) I'd put his name first on my team sheet.

SSN say that he has gone out on loan to get first team football.
Can't see Pompey letting him come here to keep the bench warm.

We havent even given Aaron Lee-Barret a chance yet !!!! Aaron is a good keeper seen him play for hartlepool and he was pretty good (very brave). he released his own contract at harlepool and was not let go by them. he was offered a new contract and he turned it down. GIVE HIM A CHANCE!!!!

Im sorry but I didnt think we needed another keeper, sure it gives Wrighty a bit of competition, but I dont think this was top on the list of priorities. Hope Roy has more lined up.

Welcome to Town though Asmir! (takes balls to come to our club atm!!)
