Keane Claimed to Be Close to Sack
Keane Claimed to Be Close to Sack
Monday, 23rd Nov 2009 09:03

Manager Roy Keane is close to being sacked after a series of Sunday meetings at the club, according to a tabloid report this morning. Saturday’s goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday sees the Blues remain second-bottom of the Championship.

Sunday meetings were held earlier on in the season at Town, so wouldn’t be an unusual step, particularly with the emergency loan deadline on Thursday and with the Blues targeting a striker.

Despite Town's current position, Keane’s sacking would probably be a surprise at this stage of the season with the Blues unbeaten in six games and chief executive Simon Clegg having repeatedly stated that he and owner Marcus Evans are looking at the long-term rather than the immediate situation.

Meanwhile, midfielder Carlos Edwards has backed Keane, who he also worked under at Sunderland: “Roy Keane is brilliant to work with.

“Everyone has a dark side, but the manager is a top man. If that hadn’t been the case I wouldn’t have been so keen to follow him down here.

“Roy Keane has been used to winning throughout his career, and right now the situation is very different for him. We need to make his job easier. He puts faith in us and we must repay him.”

Edwards says Town need to find a striker to score the goals which will turn the draws into wins: “We've solved our defensive problems, but I think we do need a striker with a proven record of scoring at his level. We do need a striker with a killer instinct in front of goal.”

Yes indeed, a striker who can get goals.....hmmm....didnt we just sell one of those?? For £150k!!!!!!!! And imo if we're in the habit of trying out different partnerships up front why on earth arent we trying Pabs and Connor? That seems the best up front combination to me......

We should back him, he is making improvements and if we can start scoring goals we will quickly rise up the table. He 's managed to sort out the defense, he can do it with the strikers as well. Keano all the way.

You can be sure as hell we'll get relegated if he gets the sack.

Makes me laugh all these fans on here with their starry eyes believing a change of manager will shoot us right up the table. I reckon around 90% of struggling clubs have still been relegated after a change of manager, it doesn't do jack. So get realistic.

But then again that requires patience which most of you don't have.

I still think that RK probably has until Xmas to get us clear of the relegation zone.

Keane promised to deliver. He hasn't.
He hasn't played the same team two games running.
Time to go, methinks :o(

If I remember rightly, Alex Ferguson was on the point of being sacked, Bobby Robson was on the point of going too and shortly after their fortunes changed - we all know what happened in the end. So in my mind this is a good story, it means we're at a turning point and we'll soon be mid table creeping up on the play-offs.

Have patience.

"according to a tabloid report" - Daily Star, I believe, so not going to read too much into that...

As for Carlos Edwards blaming our current strikers...

A) maybe he should concentrate on improving his own game. I thought when we signed him that it was a lot of money to pay for a 30-something player who hasn't played regular first team football for a couple of seasons, and he's done nothing so far to change my opinion. Need to start seeing some consistent end-product from him...

B) most strikers are only as good as the service they get (the ones that can create something out of nothing, a la Rooney / Torres, are hardly likely to be playing for us in the near future...), and we had worryingly little controlled possession against Sheff Wed at the weekend. The few times our midfield did get in a position to put in a telling pass, the final ball was wasted...

C) There's no law against midfielders chipping in with a few goals too, Mr Edwards...
