Keane: We Deserved the Win
Keane: We Deserved the Win
Sunday, 29th Nov 2009 18:50

Boss Roy Keane felt his side deserved the 2-1 victory at Cardiff City. Second half goals from Jon Walters and Jon Stead took the Blues to their second win of the season, Peter Whittingham having put the home side ahead in the first period.

Keane said: "I've had my share of luck here at Cardiff in the past but with the chances we had today I think we deserved to win.

"It was an open game but at half-time I told my players it would be a test of character and they have come through it well.

"The subs played a big part in the victory and, although I have been disappointed with results to date, I have never lost faith in the squad.

"Jon Walters has been a good leader over this difficult period and he scored a superb equaliser, while Jon Stead is starting to make a habit of scoring vital goals for us."

The Blues boss hopes the victory will help his side push on: "Our form has not been too bad but you hope the result can see us kick on now because it's wins we need.

"We had chances before our goal and Jon Walters has scored from the hardest one we had, but what pleased me was that we were creating chances.

"We may have had a bit of luck with the winner but Steady came on and made an impact. Our subs did well for us, Quinner was full of energy and Arran was solid.

"Stern John was a handful for their defence and I was pleased with him. We didn't want to play him for 90 minutes but, with Wrighty going off, we only had two changes we could make. He will be better for the game."

Keane says Wright’s knee injury will be assessed tomorrow: "Wrighty will have a scan on Monday. Obviously it's a blow losing him but we will know more tomorrow.”

The Town boss says Saturday's trip to the Millennium Stadium was intended to get his squad in the right frame of mind for the game: "Players sometimes need a break from the normal routine to relax them. That's why I took them to see Wales play Australia.

"I'm a big rugby fan anyway, so I enjoyed it. But I think the lads enjoyed the spectacle as well.

"They sampled the atmosphere of a 70,000 crowd, had the chance to see the Millennium Stadium.

"I'd like to think that most of them will maybe play before a crowd that size themselves one day."

Dave Jones was unhappy with his team’s second half display: "The players never made the right decisions after the break and it was a game we should never have lost.

"When the crowd went against the players they started to panic and some of them never wanted the ball.

"The midfield and frontline were non-existent and we hardly strung two passes together.

"When you are fighting hard to get something out of a game you have to win the ball in tackles and we didn't even do that.

"I have seen two stoppable goals go in and we need to hold on to the ball more and make the right decisions.

"Players will make mistakes but it is how you respond to them that count and everyone in the dressing room is responsible as that was our worst performance at this ground.

"At the moment we are easy to break down, but we are not a bad team collectively. We have to do better and if the players pull their fingers out we can soon get back on track."

Fantastic result, really good effort from the players & it sounds like Keano made some excellent tactical changes in the second half that won us the 3 points.

Not wishing to get carried away by any means but it does seem that Keano is starting to build a half decent, settled team. With Stern John I think that we have someone that might not bag a hat full of goals but he will bring others into the game, therefore the link between the midfield & the strikers that has been missing all season. That along with the returing Norris we should begin to climb the table.

Well done boys! Must be one of the toughest grounds in the league to go and get a result like that.

Think a good win was on the cards, lets hope we can get the points at Bristol now they can be beaten at home.

Well said utrechtblue - As we started to pile on the pressure the Cardiff fans turned on their team and they lost a one goal lead. Moaners shut up - COYB!

Great result, sounds like stern added presence to our front line which is exactly what I thought he would do. I've been far from convinced by Keane but the signs are there that we are steadily improving. Long may it continue as I'd love Keane to prove his doubters wrong, not to mention that a new manager in Jan would far from guarantee a way out. Better the devil you know.

Cracking result! I for one really did'nt really expect anything from today and will quite gladly be eating a very big slice of humble pie! Again like others have said i dont want to get carrid away either but after the Derby win you still had a feeling of loads to do, and there still is, but this win feels alot more positive that hopefully a better few weeks are ahead, i dont know why is just does.

Dobbie...Where are the moaners?

Well some numptie said on Friday " we are not moaners, we are ardent supporters"

Well Dobbie i guess the question should have been where are the ardent supporters?

Another "aredent supporter" said all of us who predicted a Town win, should "get real"...well we have got real, we have got real happy!

Things are changing for the better, a few weeks ago we would have lost this game 1-0, a littel belief from being unbeaten, and look at what we can do, just imagine what we can do with this win under our belts, anything is possible....COYB!!!!!

Chuffed to bits with the result today. Sounds like "charlie" has made immediete effect however, Keano and the blues are starting to really get there act together now. Onwards and upwards from here. Now we need the crowd, especially at home games but also away, to really get behind the lads, and you never know, a playoff position really isnt out of grasp if we do kick on and keep this unbeaten run going.
COYB!!!

At half time, I was screaming "Keano out!"....at full time, I am nominating him for freeman of the city

absolutely delighted!

Still hankering for January, hoping Keano gets us in a good enough run to convince some quality players to come join the Town Parade! Imagine 2 quality additions of the leadbitter ilk, and we are laughing..

Really interested in Yao, too.. not seen much but have read up. If Keano can control him sounds like he's a good version of Peters!
