Keane: Murphy Impressing in First Week at Town
Keane: Murphy Impressing in First Week at Town

Boss Roy Keane says he has been impressed with what he has seen of new goalkeeper Brian Murphy in training. The Irishman joined up with the Blues on Tuesday, but can’t play for Town until his Bosman move from Bohemians is formalised in January.

Keane said: “He’s looking very good. He’s had his break after the season back in Ireland and I think it’s ideal that he gets two or three weeks under his belt with us, a little mini-pre-season. Goalkeepers are different anyway and I know he’s a fit boy and looks after himself.

“He’s got two or three weeks getting a feel for the club and will be ready for selection in January. That’s good with Wrighty out for three or four months and us short of keepers.”

In Richard Wright’s absence, Murphy faces a battle for the goalkeeping position with Arran Lee-Barrett, who appears to have gone a long way towards winning an extension to his contract, which is up in January: “He’s done very well. I’m delighted with Arran.

“The last three or four weeks his training has been outstanding. I know it’s only training but at least if you’re training well it gives you a chance. You can’t be like a light switch and slack off in training and turn up on a Saturday and perform.

“He’s not had much to do in his couple of games, but what he’s had to do he’s done very well. The save in the first half the other night was outstanding, considering I don’t think had too much to do besides that. We’re very pleased with Arran.

“Arran’s fighting for another deal and he’s got that hunger and he’s got a good way about him. I like him, I like having Arran around the place, he trains well, there’s no nonsense, he keeps his head down and he doesn’t cause me any trouble. I like players like that.”

Murphy has signed an 18-month deal which starts, while Lee-Barrett joined the Blues on a short-term contract in August after Shane Supple retired.

Keane seems to be talking more positively about players recently, which is good. Players need to believe in themselves and I think it wouldn't hurt to bump some players up as much as possible to give them confidence. Tell them they are great even if they are not rather they saying they can leave, dropping them after one match and saying some will never play again.

Don't think Danny Welbeck would come to Town but it would be excellent if he did. ALB doing really well at the moment though, great to have some backup in Murphy.
