Keane Slams Palace Players as Town Appeal Against Red Card
Keane Slams Palace Players as Town Appeal Against Red Card
Saturday, 26th Dec 2009 19:14

Boss Roy Keane slammed Crystal Palace’s players for their role in Jon Stead’s red card during the first half of the 3-1 defeat at Selhurst Park. Town have confirmed that they will appeal against the red card shown to Stead by referee Paul Taylor seven minutes before half-time.

Keane was unhappy with the way the Palace players surrounded the referee after Stead’s tackle on striker Freddie Sears: ”I'm still amazed when people seem to enjoy seeing players get sent off. Some players get involved when they should have nothing to do with it.

"Other players, other managers, trying to get players sent off. It's ridiculous. That's the horrible side of football.

"It's up to the official but officials are put under pressure in different ways - but when players are sprinting up to the referee trying to get a fellow pro sent off?

"They're all supposed to be in a union together, they'll no doubt be at a dinner together at the end of the season.

"But I'll have nothing to do with it. I never want to see other players get sent off - even if there were a few tackles going in on our lads - unless there's something obviously over the top the player's going to get a red card.

"But know your players, Jon Stead's not that type of player. It was a typical striker's tackle. But let's not talk all day about the tackle.”

Keane wasn’t happy with the way his side reacted to the blow of losing a man: "It's never easy when you are a man down but I was very disappointed with the way we reacted after Steady went off.

“There are lots of ways to lose a game and I didn't like the way we lost that one.”

"We didn't keep the ball well and we gave away two bad goals. The third one I'm not worried about because we were throwing men forward.

Keane says the lack of two senior players had an effect: "It shows you that we miss Grant Leadbitter and Jon Walters and I was hoping I wouldn't have to say that and I think our best players were the younger ones, Jack Colback, Jaime Peters and Connor Wickham, when he came on.

"Jack has the chance to go on and be a top player because he's got the right character. There are a lot of good players out there but the ones with the right character go on and achieve something."

Town have confirmed that an appeal will be made, which means that Stead will be available for Monday’s home game with QPR. The striker says he was amazed when referee Taylor showed him the red card: "I was hoping we would appeal because I felt it was a yellow card at worst.

"To look up and see the red card was a massive shock to me. It wasn't two-footed, I didn't leave the ground. It was just a mis-timed tackle and a yellow card would have been plenty.

"If anything I thought it was a foul on me [by Claude Davis] before the tackle but I didn't lunge at anyone or try and hurt the player.

"I tried to speak to the referee before he showed the card but their players made it difficult in the way they were surrounding him and that was disappointing. We're all fellow professionals playing the same game.

"But as soon as they saw the red card, some of the Palace players turned around and said to me 'It wasn't a red card, you are unlucky.'

"I'm hoping the appeal comes through because it kills me. I've just got back in the team and now I could be out for three games."

If Stead’s appeal is unsuccessful, he will miss the games against Blackpool in the FA Cup and Leicester and Coventry in the league.

Even Palace manager Neil Warnock, who was Stead's boss at Sheffield United, thought the referee got it wrong, although that didn’t surprise him: “I didn't think it was red. I expected it to be red but I didn't think it warranted a red.

“I know Jonathan Stead and he isn't like that. It's one foot and it's studs showing but he didn't go over the top or anything. It wasn't red but I know Paul [Taylor] the referee quite well and I thought it would be red.”

Warnock felt the match was normal post-Christmas fare: “I thought it was a typical Boxing Day game. It's the first time we have come from behind to win this season.

“We were close against Barnsley, we usually give teams a goal start if we can, make them feel at home.

“I thought at half-time it was there if we kept a little bit of discipline. We could have had more goals and they had the busiest goalkeeper, even before the sending off.

“We are a genuine bunch of players trying hard and I thought the fans were super today and it's a great Christmas win for us.”

The most that the challenge deserved was a yellow card. The referee was shocking today.

Hopefuly the card will be overturned. Their centre half, Claude Davies, was fouling a lot but getting a way with it. Typical Championship donkey!!

The most interesting comments are from Warnock--he'll probably get himself a fine.

"Other players, other managers, trying to get players sent off. It's ridiculous. That's the horrible side of football."

How about other players deliberately going out to injure other players and destroy their careers?

I rest my case.

So, the referee was Paul Taylor? Nuff said really - he HATES Ipswich - he has sent off several Town players in the past for no good reason and he has repeatedly been biased against us. He is not competent enough to referee at this level.

Sadly, the poor standard of refereeing shown by Mr. Taylor is all too common in the "lower leagues" and their baffling decisions continue to affect the outcome of a high proportion of matches. Stead's punishment merited no more than a yellow card. Anyone who witnessed Barnsley's Darren Moore deliberating stand on Priskin's head at Oakwell, in October, and escape with a yellow after the Town player had made a dodgy challenge on their keeper, will be familiar with the kind of frustrations away sides have to endure.
Some of the Premiership refs are crap (Steve Bennett to name but one) but Fergie, Wenger and the rest of them can count themselves lucky not to have to encounter these officials who time and again leave you asking - "have you ever played football yourself?"

Paul Taylor used to work in IT before becoming a full-time referee.

Thats right Keano, totally agree they are meant to be in a Union. I mean who in their union would want to see another pro sent off, or even end someone in that unions career, who would want to end another players career Keane????

Whilst being a staunchTown fan and a big supporter of Roy Keane in this job, I have to say my eyebrow raised a little when I read his comments criticising players who surround the referree to try to bully him into giving a decision their way. Is this the same man who I remember, with a few mates, chasing Andy D'Urso (I think it was, and if it was then no sympathy, he deserves what he gets!!) right to the corner flag while disputing a pen given against Man U at Old Trafford?
Again I stress, I support Town and Keano, but what the Palace players (apparently) did is not new, it's a ploy that's been around for years, dispicable as it is. A bit of pots and kettles maybe? Looking forward to Monday's game, when I'll be blue through and through, supporting players and manager alike.

I wuz there - disappointed with the way Town capitulated after conceding a goal - Stead's challenge was needless, but should have been a yellow at worse. Palace were all over Town in the 2nd half. Our keeper was indecisive, unable to kick properly (50% of his goal kicks went into touch) and doesn't command his penalty area with any confidence at all. Delaney and Mcauley did OK, although some of their clearances were below par (into touch or straight to a Palace player). Wright was reasonable, but made to work hard by Moses, Rosenior disappeared as an attacking force in the 2nd half (not sure whether his defending is as good as his forward play, though), Colback played with a maturity way ahead of his 19 yrs (he would have done better with an experienced player beside him, though), Healy was better than expected, but would not be any great shakes, Edwards was OK before his enforced substitution, Garvan on the wing was generally anonymous. Peters made lots of clever moves with the ball and his passing and seemed to be the only Town player that made Palace get their knickers in a twist, Stead was a constant thorn to the Palace defence before his sending off, Whickham was not as commanding - he can hold the ball up well and distributes it reasonably, but has no pace and is unable to do the unexpected which can win games (a la Gio last season).
All in all, well done to Peters and Colback; Keano, not sure about your tactical awareness; we need a new keeper ASAP

uefa.... there is a biggggg difference between wanting someone sent off for no reason...and wanting to end somones career because they had almost ended yours.

Blueknight, I think you should track your history books back a little and find the real reason Keane did what he did, you may find you might have to retract a little. Keane was wrong for what he did and should have been banned from the game afterwards.

UEFA81, I wouldn't call your particularly feeble ad hominem argument a 'case'. Did you know that, officially, people with IQs in the 0-25 range are idiots and in the 26-50 range are imbeciles? If you work really, really hard in 2010, you could be an imbecile by this time next year!

blueknight, i cannot and will not condone what Keane did as a player.
But, he seems to think that if you wish to take retriution against an opponent who you feel(rightly, or wrongly) has done you a misdeed, get your own back.
Do not use the referee, and go crying to teacher, and try to cheat the players, fans and ultimately yourself of any respect.
uefa81....speaking of respect, you have none at all.
None for our club, and conversly we have none for you...FFS post something positive for once!!!
New year resolution, stop letting little weasel wingers get under my skin!!!!
(if i am to succeed with this i need your help uefa81, so please eff off)

In my opinion Paul Taylor is one of the worst referees on the list and as one previous posting has suggested he has done ITFC few favours although he did send Callum Davidson off when we played PNE this season. I cannot forgive the ridiculous penatly decision he gave against us at Notts County in the league Cup a few years back and I cannot stand a Referee who keeps smiling all the time. The bloke is an absolute joke and lets hope this is his last season. I cringed when I saw he was our Referee before the match and he did not let me down with his awful standard of Refereeing. We have to get on with it however and lets hope our luck changes soon, after all we have not had much of it this season.

Good to see the negative posters out again - they have nothing better to do - still waited a while.

Disappointing sending off, which sadly cost us dear. Hopefully the card wil be over turned, yet generally on these occasions they are not as the FA tend to back the referee.

A dreadful ref and I can understand why Roy is disappointed.

Yes I agree that the Palace players shouldn't have reasted like that. However, what was the need for players like Rosenior to come running over and involved himself. Came running around 50 yards to get right in the middle of the pushing and shoving, the ref wasnt exactly gna change his mind was he, and could have got himself needlessly booked or worse.

This RESPECT campaign has gone right down the pan hasnt it. When it was launched, yeah it went well for this first couple of months but now look.

I mean did any of you see the Watford players after they had a penalty claim denied yesterday?

What happened to just the captains and the offender speaking to the referee? It's just ridiculous and puts more and more pressure on the referee, which clearly isnt right.

Sort in out the FA

If you play the game with passion sometimes you do things that are wrong. But players know when other players are right or wrong - Steady did nothing and the Palace players were out of order. But Warnock says he knew the ref and you wonder if they were told to do that. Hows the snow up in budgieland Eufa?
