Keane Confirms Klug Axing
Keane Confirms Klug Axing
Saturday, 16th Jan 2010 12:43

Town manager Roy Keane says this week’s axing of long-serving coach Bryan Klug was part of an ongoing process of change at Portman Road. Klug, who was contracted to the club until the end of the season, had been coaching the Blues at one level or another since 1987, having been a youth player and reserve team captain in the early eighties.

Keane says he made the decision to curtail 49-year-old Klug’s time at the club in the wake of other people joining the coaching staff: “He’s done very well at the club, he’s been a very good servant, but I’ve been in the job now five or six months and I’ve decided make a few changes. Charlie [Ian McParland] came in, Antonio Gomez and Tony Loughlan came in. I just decided to make that change.

“He’s a very, very good coach, he’s got vast experience, he’s worked at different levels at the club — the first team, the academy, the reserves — and we wish him well.”

The Blues boss says he is constantly looking at areas where Town can be improved: “I said a few months ago that every day of the week I’m sussing out the club and weighing everybody up and hopefully that will continue as long as I’m at the club.

“You’re never 100% happy, you’re always looking for improvement from the first team, the medical staff, the scouting or wherever, and we’ll make changes if we feel they need changes.”

Sometimes people need to move on. Am sure Klug will do a great job somewhere else.

Keane 's is building a new Ipswich and needs to do it his own way. Maybe that's we're we've gone wrong before...to afraid to let go of that past, clinging on to ties with the Robson era.

There was nothing wrong with the Robson era mistert, but i definitely agree that sometimes we have to be brave and sacrifice things for the greater good. Winners keep on winning, I haven't heard too many people describe RK as a loser. We should all get behind him and we will see great things at our club.

I actually think this is a good move. Klug undoubtedly did well with the youth team and bringing on some of our best academy products but he hasn't been doing that job for some time now and there is little evidence that he has been a great success in the roles he has assumed since moving up from the academy. So it appears that we have a good man in the wrong role. Sentiment has no place in modern football and so he had to go. Maybe a new challenge at a new club is exactly what he needs as well.

Have you noticed that the disagreements between 'fans' were being posted while we were still playing Coventry? Need I say more?

50yearsablue - well, some of us can multitask! I was listening to commentary and typing at same time. Incidentally, am ST holder who has 250 mile round trip to all home games. Only arrived back in the country at lunchtime so no time to get to PR.

FarringdonBlue: not totally disagreeing with your view that people resist change and that Klug going is necessarily a bad thing. But to put Keane on a pedastal because of his playing career is just crazy. It's well known that very, very few great players make great managers.

Off the top of my head, Ferguson, Wenger, Benitez were all average/poor players and Mourinho didn't even play football professionally. So please don't equate playing to managing.

There are far too many fans on here you seem to think Keane is the second coming because he was a great player under a great manager. Personally I judge him purely on Ipswich's performances under him. Which had been pretty dire.

Things are improving though and there's now real hope, though I still await to see the success of his next set of transfers.

But why so many are keen to place so much faith in him because of his playing career I do not know.

And don't mention Sunderland, he's already shown here that that was a fluke (i.e. he had instant success, which certainly hasn't been the case here).
