Keane: Fans Have Been Magnificent
Keane: Fans Have Been Magnificent
Thursday, 11th Feb 2010 16:47

Town boss Roy Keane has thanked fans for their patience during what has been a disappointing season. The Blues boss says he will be making sure his players give due thanks to supporters after future games, having been unhappy that some have failed to do so in the past.

Keane told the club site: "Our fans have been magnificent this season. They could easily have lost patience with some of the players, the team and myself but they haven't done that.

"We all appreciate it. Some of my players have disappeared down the tunnel too quick for my liking in some games without showing their thanks to the supporters - that won't be happening again, you can be sure about that.

"Our fans have travelled in large numbers and at home, we have been hitting 20,000 - in a season which has been disappointing.

"I want us to get up to 30,000 and see the place full up. That will only come with us winning football matches. If we are winning games every week, the supporters will come in their numbers."

Great story to read on here, well said Mr Keane and roll on Tuesday. Shame about the comment from ChambersM though, Yes the Sir Booby stand has got us through some games this season and yes they make the most noise but every stand at PR deserves the same respect and appreiciation. Anyway COYB!

i cannot believe there are so many of you raving on about how great keane us !!!! face facts!!!! we are 19th in the league 1 point above relegation with a team of no-hopers,he signed martin, crap, priskin crap, edwards crap, the list is endless,we still play awful football and you can still see the light.....unreal.......we must have 30 plus players in the squad and we never will have a settled team under this man....hes only still in a job cos of who he is,anyone else would have been sacked months ago.....i see no signs of any improvement, and to have to talk the players into thanking the fans.....well that just about says it all to me......keane out.

Good stuff. Totally agree. I have no doubt that the players will thanks the fans at away games in the future.

naaridge1coly7 ur a mug. while keane is in charge he will have my full support. u cant say we are moving backwards. yes the start of the season was sh*t, but we are getting better all the time and moving in the right direction for next season, i didnt expect us 2 go up this year, the only reason there was anticipation around the club was cos of the media and keanes status, we were awful under magilton and it was going to take more than a pre season to fix that. i agree priskin and martin were awful buys but look at the decent signings, delaney leadbitter murphy rosenior etc, all are the core of our team, get behind RK and the team ! COYB !

Frankly, we were far worse under JM. Watching us under JM was the most depressed i've ever been as a Town fan. Yet people whinge about this season? If you've watched us all season, we've only played badly a few times. We've been extraordinarily unlucky in the most thankless league on the planet, and its during a transitory season. As i was saying in September, Keano's job was so huge from the dire squad left behind, it was always going to take a long time. Even Majilton said he inherited a better squad at QPR.. they're doing well(!)

naaridge1coly7 - clearly not here for educated debate. 'The [incoming transfers] list is endless'? Bizarre thing to say. Not even worth engaging with that mate.

Naa - You're scepticism is fence sitting mate. For a man who supports Town solely, in the context we're in (Championship) i'm not sure who can deliver what you want?

Being behind Keane isnt all about being behind Keane; it's as much about not being against him. That is the only environment fertile for ITFC progression. United fans, in love with club and manager, singing their hearts out and enjoying the ride.

If i'm honest, Portman Road is a pretty dull atmosphere compared with many grounds. We hardly have a cauldron, yet expect/demand to be entertained. Fine, there is the chicken/egg argument.
But the fans dont understand the impact they can have.

So everyone, get behind the team. Clubs are always stronger after a season we've had. It separates wheat from chaff, and we build onwards and upwards. Keano has at least 1 more season, of Championship football, before I will start to get frustrated. All about perspective, chaps.

naa....
neither should he be criticised by the clubs own fans untill he has been sacked or quit as you have no idea how he will finish up at the club.
He has a 2 year contract promotion was expected by the end of the 2 years the whole club has seen a complete overhaul all his work so far could turn out to be genius regardless of the current league position.
Stating the bleeding obvious can also be viewed as telling the truth....would you prefer a manager who avoided the truth and had more excuses than blades of grass on the pitch?
Based on the changes through out the club i think its scandelous to pass such harsh judgements on anyone just yet.

Well said Keane, it has been a frustration season but the fans who have turned up this season have been brilliant, it's good you acknowledge us. Anyway Naarwich boy you say that the list of crap signings is endless, well it seems your list has ended- at 3!

I was there on Tuesday singing my little heart out, but I shut up when ever there were any chants for 'Keano!'. It strikes me that these are the vocal minority.

Our fans are magnificent, just very, very, very, very, very, very quiet. I have learned a great deal about organising the back four by listening to the shouted instructions of various goalkeepers this season. 20,000 fans and the loudest voices are on the pitch! COYB!

Even when we were 1st for a lots of the season a few years back we were still only averaging around 26k

ITFC steve .... Murphy and Rosenoir are not signings just loans and if we stay in the position we have been all season unlikely to sign.
Keanes signings

Resigned Bruce - poor out on loan
Resigned Trotter- poor out on loan
Brown - never played
B.Murphy - still to play
Healy - poor out on loan
Priskin - poor out on loan
Martin - poor cannot get in team,or bench
Edwards - poor cannot get in team
Delaney - Good centre back but very poor left back for a number of games
Leadbitter - excellent signing but should be for £3.5 million in this league

I agree the structure is there for next season ,if we can sign the loan players or we may lose Murphy,Rosenoir,Colback,Healy and i sincerely hope Keane succeeds as we need someone of his stature to take us further, but for me until he proves himself at Ipswich i will hold back my mass congratulation for him as we are only halfway to last seasons points total of 66 which has been described on here as an awful season on a number of occasions ,bet we dont say that about this season if we fall short ?

Not entirely sure how my comments can be seen as fence-sitting. I said that this season we have been poor and Keane has many several mistakes - many of which he has implicitly accepted - but similarly I believe that people should be given time, so I'm happy to see him here next year (provided we don't actually go down).

All I'm saying is that rather utterly pointless "Keane is great!", "Keano!" cr@p comments we keep hearing why not give an honest assessment of how we think he's done.

That's all I've ever done. His overall performance as manager this year has got to be seen as poor. But there have been glimmers of hope throughout the last two months to suggest that it's worth giving him time.

So, not fence-sitting but, I'd like to think, a relatively thoughtful assessment and not some tosh about how he's great when clearly there is no evidence so far to suggest as much.

Oh and BlueKnight85: why can't we criticise until he's been sacked? That's stupid. If I do a rubbish job at work I'd expect to get criticised by my boss, but also by my collegues who I'm letting down and, if I work in a public facing position, by the people I serve.

Keane is essentially serving us, the fans, as well as the club itself and we certainly have the right to criticise. As long as that criticism is sensible and considered.

We have both types on here. Pointless moaning and pointless adoration. Both are pathetic. But why you think Keane is exempt from criticism until Evans sacks him I just do not know.

Spot on Surco72.
It was time for Jim to go and for a new manager to try and move the Club back to where we want them to be, in the Premiership. Keane has made changes from bottom to top through the club staff and players. We all have opinions on alot of those decisions be them staff changes or players in and out. It's fair to say that at least on the players in and some out's that mistakes have been made.
With a mid table finish last year and all the money spent this year the fans expected something better. As yet this hasn't materialised on the pitch but it definately seems to be improving and although I doubt we can end up much better if at all than last year, the signs are that we could be a force to reckon with next year. This will obviously be effected by those players whose loans spells finish and don't come back next year and any other ins and out in the closed season.
Roy definately has the passion and desire to win (as Jim had) and hopefully will start to show by a climb up the table. We need to have a decent side together for next season with the likes of the scum and Leeds likely to come back up.

naa - a fair and honest appraisal would allow him to be judged objectively in all the circumstances. Most competitive league. A club players do not want to come to. (Majilton wouldnt have been able to draw big players we have, and i hasten to add we'd have been in as much or more trouble this season with JM still, but that's merely conjecture) (RK has attracted people, not ITFC). Been in job less than one year. (Fine, he came in with fighting talk. Its Sport. That's a major part and sometimes u have egg on face. Happens weekly to Top managers). He's been massively prudent. He has loaned players to test rather than commit us and ruin our future financially.

I would subsitute the word 'poor' with 'unlucky', it's as simple as that.

So many occasions his own players have let him down. He's sorting that out.

And for me, sport is about your front. Do fans like you at PR every week really get behind the team? can you with such massive doubts? You need to commit to the cause dear boy. The only way PR will be a cauldron is if teams come and fear us as a club. fans can do that up to (arbitrary) 80% i reckon. Man City were beaten by the atmosphere at OldT a couple of weeks back, they couldnt handle it and got scared. Teams come to us and settle down. We hear the away fans loud and proud, they have no reason to fear us as a club.

Thats another reason i was depserate for Roy to come. He gives us an edge and if we as fans embrace the aggression, we can help a lot.

As it stands, unfortunately for Roy, we have fans disaffected to the extent he's been 'given a chance' but that also manifests in librarian PR. I love my club dearly, but PR is an embarrassment for atmosphere.

Someone bring a bloody drum!

Hmmm sorry but you can be unlucky in a game, you can't be unlucky in a season - Keane has openly admitted that. We are where we are because we've been largely rubbish.

At the start of the season we were terrible and we still played some pretty poor long ball stuff for long periods against Boro. West Brom totally outplayed us too. OK, they're a good team, but in the past that wouldn't be the case. Burley's teams were hardly ever outplayed at home, and I refuse to accept that the quality in this divison has improved since then.

I was never bothered by the promotion talk Keane etc spouted, it's typical manager talk. I'm guaging my expectations on previous years and managers, not some unreasonable expectation.

Fact is, under Royle and Magilton (when he first took over) we did better with much, much worse squads than we have now.

Stop making excuses for everything. It's been a poor season and Keane has made many mistakes.

However, as I said, I'm willing to give it a bit more time to see if we really are moving forwards.

And you're right when you say his players have let him down. But that's the problem isn't it? A lot of them are his players, ones he signed. That's not good for a manager, especially one given a bit of cash to spend.

I admit I haven't been overly vocal this year, but I'm one of the fans that needs to see some spirit to give some. Could be seen as a failing, I agree, but I'm hardly alone. I've certainly given it when we've been up for it this season.

Mind you, I think the development of the Bobby Robson stand has a lot to answer for. I sit in South Stand and can barely hear it, whereas when it was single tier it was much louder. Maybe the club need to mic it up and play the noise over the sound system.
