Town Linked With Cardiff's Kennedy
Town Linked With Cardiff's Kennedy

Welsh reports are linking Town with a loan move for veteran Cardiff City left-back Mark Kennedy. The 33-year-old is a regular in Dave Jones’s side, but the Bluebirds are in financial trouble and may be forced to allow players to leave.

Just before the January transfer window closed, Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale confirmed that Blues boss Roy Keane had been in touch about a player who wasn’t rumoured target Michael Chopra.

Kennedy is a player well-known to Keane, the two having played together for the Republic of Ireland, for whom the Dubliner won 34 caps, scoring four goals.

The 5ft 11in tall left-back or winger played youth football at Home Farm where the likes Owen Garvan, Shane Supple and Alan Lee also played as youngsters and where Garvan’s father is a coach.

Kennedy’s first English club was Millwall, who he joined in 1992, moving on to Liverpool in 1995 for £1.5 million. After three years at Anfield, during which time he went on loan at QPR, Kennedy joined Wimbledon for £1.75 million.

A year later he made a switch to Manchester City for £1 million, then after two years at Maine Road Kennedy moved on to Wolves for £2 million.

In 2006 after five years at Molineux, Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer, moving on to Cardiff in the summer of 2008, again on a free.

Since his move to Wales, Kennedy has made 56 starts and five sub appearances but is yet to score.

Town boss Roy Keane has been looking for a left-back for some while having failed to settle on a regular left-sided full-back this season. In recent weeks David Wright, Jaime Peters, Pim Balkestein and Jack Colback have all played in the role.

Better than a kick in the teeth will definitely rival David Wright.
cue the Keane bashing anti Irish comments though... most likely from canary or rangers fans that have nothing better to do

Hmm does'nt sound so convincing but i haven't seen him play much so i'm willing to give him a shot. Don't know whats happened to David Wright thought. Is a quality defender IMO but losing his form so maybe this guy could do better or at least give Wright a kick up the backside. KEANO!

Yes, what is Keane doing? After all, it's signed and in the bag isn't it, not just a rumour, let's not rule out the possibility it could be complete BS no?

A regular from a team that's doing well, yet again, he must be having a poor season, I see where you're coming from Dudly.

It's one of the few positions we haven't got an Oirish player!!!!

No probs with this, he's prob better than what we've got at Left back.

Hmmmm, on the Cardiff website it say's he's a midfielder, but before we all start spitting our dummies out we are only LINKED, again!!! It doesn't mean we even interested.

Well, we could do with a left sided midfielder too!

good addition to the squad if we get him, cheap loan, can play left midfeild or defence, two of our problem areas. allows keane to use the likes of peters, colback and garvan in their more favoured positions and perhaps creates competition on the left for players in need of form, martin and edwards and david wright?

good thinking keane...if there's any truth to it!

We haven't got an O'Irish tea lady?! or an O'Murphy coach driver!

You've got to watch that Nigel Kennedy, he's always on the fiddle!!!!

a loan move would be ideal as we can see if he fits in with the team would be nice to have extra left footers in the squad. dont care if he is irish or from sunderland or from scum as long as he wants to play for ipswich, but on saying that i would like us to spend a bit more money on our youth setup.

I'm not sure why everyone goes on about David Wright, at left-back he has been awful, a better right back, but I'd prefer someone with a left foot at left back, Colback did a much better job

Too slow i'm afraid. I seem to remember his career has been very injury prone, at 33 yo surely this is not going to improve.....

Well Civelli played at left-back many times in Argentina, yet you wouldn't think it after seeing his superb (and sorely missed!!) left-wing performances for us would you?

David Wright isn't good enough for our first team anymore. Even Colback was better than him when he played there against QPR, and he's a midfielder!

I think Kennedy would be a good signing. Doesn't matter where he HAS played in the past or is a listed as playing on a website. The fact is he is a left back at the moment, in form, and we need a decent left back.
I think Wright is a good player but he needs some competition and always best to have a naturally left footed player playing in a left sided position.
Thatcher must be well out of the picture. Does his contract expire in the summer?

so one past-it Irish left back replaced by another past-it irish left back

Can't believe people are already moaning! We have only been linked! Anyway, a resular in a play-off / promotion chasing side - can't be bad surely?

Thatchers contract is up this year, I think ! He has been in the reserves playing , so cant be totally out of favour. Still got a niggling injury.
Capaldi is no great player but also a Cardiff LB . Maybe its him as he is their reserve and younger.

What about Joe Mattock . Young talented player fallen out of favour at WBA and doing nothing.

He's been there, done it so will bring in good experience to help us maintain our Championship status if we can get hold of him till end of season.
