Thatcher Contract Settled
Thatcher Contract Settled
Friday, 26th Feb 2010 15:50

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has confirmed that the club have settled defender Ben Thatcher’s contract. The former Wales international’s deal was due to end in the summer.

Clegg says the says the details of the settlement were completed earlier today and that Thatcher is no longer a Town player: “We’d liked to recognise the contribution that Ben has made to the club, thank him for his time here and wish him well for his future.”

Thatcher added: "I want to wish the club the very best for the future.

"They are a great set of lads in the dressing room and I want to see them climb the table over the rest of the season.

"I want to carry on playing and definitely feel I can do a job on the pitch for another year or two and then I might look at coaching."

Thatcher, who never made a senior appearance under Roy Keane’s management, joined the Blues on a free transfer from Charlton in the summer of 2008.

The former Manchester City man annoyed the current Blues manager with his refusal to move home from London, Keane revealing that an announcement on Thatcher’s future was close a week ago.

The 34-year-old will be unable to join another club until next season.

Havent seen enough playing for us to comment really.
But from what we've read its a case of not getting on with Keane and not moving house - no bearing on what he's like as a player or what he may be able to bring to the team.
Is it a case of to get in to Keanes team you have to be punctual, train hard, tow the party line etc, and is doesnt matter how good you actually are or whether you'd add something to the team. (See also D Wright, Garvan, Pablo....)

Mutual consent = sacked. Have Town ever sacked anyone before? (Adam Tanner?)

no great shame, not a great player. he has a tarnished reputation from his behaviour at earlier points in his career, maybe if he'd helped pick pedro mendes' nose back up for him then people wouldnt take such immediate dislike to him. that said, his refusal to move closer to town was the final nail in his ipswich coffin. see you later alligator

He'll probably make a great manager for some struggling Championship team in the not to distant future, with a history like that.
Deliberate injury to opposition player, refusal to move his family closer to his employer, who does that remind me of??

Thank god for that (not that god exists of course). Never liked the bloke, expecially after his horendous elbow to Pedro Mendes a few years back.

I don't blame the club. His failure to move closer to the training ground was always going to be a problem. Let's not forget Thatcher was a panic buy after Jim 'I have never made a bad signing' Magilton failed to land his main target at the start of last season. I never agreed with the signing and am delighted he is off the books.

Amazed that Keane and Thatcher didn't hit it off, because they are 2 mindless thugs together. Maybe just too similar, I guess.

I actually liked Thatcher and think he could have done a job for us this season. Obviously there were other factors leading to this as well. I wish him well.

Good to get Thatcher off the wage list.....I imagine as one of the senior members on the squad he'd have probably been on quite a bit.

Daleyitfc Well thatcher and keane might have been alike in attitude but one was the best midfield player of his generation the other a pub player.

I don't blame Keano. Thatcher's failure to move closer to the training ground was always going to be a problem. Thatcher was a panic buy after Magilton failed to land his main target at the start of last season. I'm pleased to see that this Thug is off our books. It always worried me that he would get nicked for GBH on the pitch rather than be a quality left back.

GOOD RIDDANCE!!!

Idiotic decision. The club does not save any money on it and the player can't get a new club until the summer. We should have kept him and used him as a left back instead of playing someone out of position.

Yea, Adam Tanner, but didn't we sack Gary Croft too?

Thatcher was a YOB. Should never have been signed for us. Millwall, Cardiff, Wolves, yes, but not Ipswich!

should we sack keane then ?

Should have been sacked for breach of contract (failing to turn up for training). I suspect that he was not paid the full value of the rest of his contract.

I can't remember him being particularly 'dirty' when with us. Just the sending off against Cardiff when he clipped Routledge's heels on the edge of the box (if my memory serves me right) I think people have remembered the Mendes incident and judged him purely on that - bad as it was. The same people probably have forgiven Roy for his famous lunge however.
