Town Appeal Delaney's Red Card
Town Appeal Delaney's Red Card
Monday, 15th Mar 2010 10:56

Town have confirmed that thet have launched an appeal against the red card Damien Delaney received in Saturday's victory over Scunthorpe. The Irishman faces a three-match ban for a dismissal for serious foul play if referee Pat Miller’s decision is upheld.

Boss Roy Keane told the club site: "We've had a look at the DVD and the club are now in the process of appealing."

The FA’s Disciplinary Committee will hear the appeal at 1pm on Tuesday. If Town are successful, the central defender will be available for the game against Watford, if not, then Delaney faces a three-match ban and the possibility of a fourth if the FA decide that the appeal is frivolous, as was the case with Jon Stead’s sending off at Crystal Palace earlier in the season.

Scunthorpe have already announced that they will be appealing Cliff Byrne's red card earlier in Saturday's game.

Interesting comments on EADT from D.Wright

“And the referee said that Damien two-footed him (Jonathan Forte). I wear contact lenses and I never saw that! I don't think my eyesight is that bad. One of the lads said he two-footed him, and the ref said 'yes,'” confirmed Wright.

If the Ref stands by this being the reason for the sending off then surely the FA must overturn it, but can seriously see a 4 banner coming on the grounds of a professional foul, and the FA bailing out one of their referees!. These guys would get far more respect overturning a decision and admitting a mistake....

Deliberate, cynical foul - Yes = Yellow
Two-footed, last man - No = Do your job FA!

It was the softest red card i have ever seen, especially considering McAuley was 15yards further back! The worst trio of officials ever at PR!

Sito's red card against Norwich was over-turned .. As was Alex Bruce against Derby (When he and Bywater were sent off). Oh, and George O'Callaghan against Watford in the FA Cup.

The F.A. will always try to support the referee. Was there a referee assessor at the game? If so surely his opinion could be an input to the appeal. Mr Miller was trying to even things up and that is always a mistake most referees learn in their first season. Never change your decision, and don't try to correct a mistake. The linesman was running the outside right diagonal and was closer to the tackle than the referee running the left wing diagonal. I'm surprised he was not consulted.
Perhaps Mr Miller made up his mind during the Scunthorpe protests.

EJP: but that was before this new 'frivolous' ruling which seems to have ended up meaning 'nothing gets overturned and we'll probably sitck the extra game on anyway because we can't be bothered with this whole appeals process anymore and are trying desperately to put you all off even trying'.

Btu anyone with eyesight can see that that was never 'serious foul play' it was a classic cynical trip. The ref was clearly influenced by the cheating, mouthy scumbags surrounding him at the time.

God Scunthorpe were horrible.

Cracko's quote from EADT is what david wright said on radio suffolk after the game. The scunny players told the ref is was two-footed and the ref bought it. IF the ref put's in his match report that the red was for a two-footed tackle THEN we might have good grounds for an appeal as video evidence shows that it was in no way shape or form two-footed. An extra game gets added if the club bring no NEW evidence suppporting the player to the table and just turn up to argue the toss.

I think the most likely scenario is the ref put it down as serious foul play, the FA will uphold the ruling but no extra game will be added. That of course is a complete joke as the decision was awful and clearly influenced by the scunny players who surrounded the ref, however, the FA will not overturn a decision no matter how poor it is if it's a matter of interpretation. They will only overturn it if the reason for the sending off can be proved to be completely invalid, i.e. a handball where video evidence shows it struck the chest etc.

Part of the problem is the word 'frivolous' - which really can mean whatever the FA want it to mean.

It's their 'get out of jail' card.

And it is about time that the FA put a stop to players approaching the ref to demand punishment of an opposition player.

Cheers SouperJim - I find it baffling how anyone (even the scunny players) could appeal for it being two-footed!

Delaney didn't even leave the ground, he just hung out a right leg and stayed upright.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it impossible to challenge two-footed whilst standing up??? Not hopeful of Wrighty's comments but see it as the only probable way to avoid a ban if the ref has this in his report as the reason for a red card as SouperJim states.

Or is he called 'Donkey Delaney' because of a third leg which caused the trip?

I love that term "professional foul" How can you have a professional foul? Is there a professional way to boot someone clean up in the air?? or Julian Dicks someone? I can't even say that Delaney's tackle was serious foul play? A trip! Still, I hope that the Board of Fools see sense and do the right thing:

The laws state that it's a red card if IN THE REF'S OPPINION it was serious foul play.

The Officials on Saturday were shocking - neither of the Red cards shown were warranted.I dont have any confidence in the FA to overturn them especially after the Stead Red card earlier in the season....

Never a sending off, justified!

PunchNoHopers added 17:43 - Mar 15
Well I hope it is successful, though I doubt it will be! There again, they will probably let the Scunnie defender off and give Delaney a 4 game suspension, just to inflict suffering on us!

Okay i've looked up the law of Serious Foul Play and it states:

Serious foul play
A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality
against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play.
A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as
serious foul play.
Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the
front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force
and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

So what the hell part of the above has the ref interpreted as serious foul play by Delaney???

Bet you if our name was Man Utd or Chelsea or Arsenal or even Liverpool then the red card would be overturned.

Stevie G can elbow Brown in the back of the head and only concede a foul.

Very poor decision on Saturday, however the dusty and cobweb covered bastions at the FA hardly every overturn red cards unless a) the referee admits he was wrong & b) you managers name is Wenger or Ferguson
So a good job our Kiwi is back then!!!
