Keane: First Goal Crucial
Keane: First Goal Crucial
Tuesday, 23rd Mar 2010 23:38

Boss Roy Keane thought his Town side started slowly and crucially conceded the game’s first goal in the 2-0 home defeat to Plymouth.

Keane said: "We were a bit sluggish. The first goal was always going to be vital and we didn't get it.

"The players got a bit frustrated and to give two bad goals away didn't help. We gave them a helping hand and got punished for our mistakes.

"We huffed and puffed but became a bit predictable. The word tonight is frustration, rather than anger.

"Had Plymouth opened us up and scored good goals it would be one thing, but we gave two bad ones away.

"There will be the usual over-reaction but we have to remember it was our first home defeat since September.

"We had good opportunities but didn't hit the target. That was frustrating and has been a problem all season. We don't score enough goals and are liable to give bad ones away."

Plymouth boss Paul Mariner unsurprisingly enjoyed his evening back at Portman Road: "It was a special night. I got a tremendous reception from the fans and can't thank them enough.

"We had a great rapport together when I played here but, equally, it was pretty special coming back in my present role with Plymouth.

"I thought my players were unbelievable and extremely professional. There's a resilience and willingness and these lads really want to get out of this. They're peeved by the situation we're in.

"They're buying into what we're trying to do and I'm loving working with them. Everybody played their part and even the lads on the bench made an impact.

"Every game has been a six-pointer for many months but what we've got to build now is confidence. When you're at the bottom of the table that's difficult.

"I thought it was going to be our night and it turned out to be that way. We were blocking stuff and heading it away."

Stiffshorts: Fair enough mate - can't really argue with that! Hope you'll be back soon...
Cornwalltractor: "In Keane we rust..." Quality! That really made me smile - thanks...
1RWR: These do indeed seem to be the hard, cold facts now don't they? All else is sentiment and hope...

Let's not blame Keane..all he does is buy the players, decides the tactics, picks the team and motivates them.

Jeeeeesus, there still seem to be a minority on here who seem to love Keane more than the club...it's beyond belief..are you family, friends or just Man utd fans who'll follow Keano wherever he goes?

We (who want better than this abysmal state of affairs) were told to give him til xmas..did you mean xmas 2010?

I seem to get the feeling more and more people are starting to dislike keane? I like it! Although people should have realised this a long time ago like i did, he cannot manage, and hes not the type of manager we want at ipswich! We dont need a high profile manager! Tactically hes useless, substitution wise hes inept, HEALY?! No thanks. He p****s money up the wall (martin edwards priskin) and just generally, has no clue.

To see Paul Mariner back on the hallowed turf last night made up for a truly miserable night.

I urge you Mr Evans, to do the right thing and sack Keane and to bring in a proper manager that fits the bill for our great club.

Keane has been given every chance to have made his mark at Portman Road. He has bought badly and has never allowed any of the players to get in to their stride.
His tactics are found wanting and rather than stand up and back his players as Paul Mariner did he remained sulking in his seat.
Goodbye Keane - I will use some of your very own words ' Get Over It '

First post on here so this is a rather exciting point in my life!.
I said from his appointment he will be no good and erm, well he is no good.
Similar to Jim but more angrier and less good results.
Got rid of all the young players.
Has a team full of players that can't run fast, which is an epic fail in this day and age. And one of the only ones that can (Jamie Peters) doesn't play enough.

Only thing i will commend him on is that he bought Darryl Murphy in.

Without him scoring we would be seriously sinking in the quicksand without a branch to grab on to.

I personally have backed keane all season .. but last night was a disgrace !
Scunthorpe = ok performance got away with it
Watford =Terrible performace no character
Barnsely = Bad performance scrapped the win
Plymouth = Horrific performance no leadership

The whole thing is getting a joke now ! The time has come to make a change. However I dont believe Curbs will be the right man to take over... it took him 3/4 years to do well with Charlton.. and he lead them to financial problems!
I would go for Tony Mowbray !

Got to Say Tony Mowbray would be a good shout.

Likes his teams to play football.

As much as I respect Mowbray he wouldn't be my choice..find him slightly dour/doesn't get excited on touchline when his team scores (just like rafa benitez, which I find odd)..want to see some passion on the touchline.

Think Swansea may put us all out of our season long Keane-misery this weekend.

Would love to see George Burley given another chance with Matty Holland on board too.

We all left early ; in the car home no one spoke. We've all watched the Town for over 50 years & we have seen many dire performances over those years , but talking this morning we all agreed this was one of the worst & we've had enough. Four old men who are not renewing for next year; hopefully enough people won't & ME will have to get rid of him. No guts ; no pace ; no guile - just a team of one paced runners. felt sorry for O'Conner as he looks like a good prospect & at least he tried. What sort of a scouting system do we have that over the last couple of years has brought us Stead ; Priskin; Martin; Healey (x2); Edwards;Balkenstein & Norris for a lot of money - not a footballer amongst them.

not too sure about Curbs either, decent bloke, knows the job .but seems dull ,a bit like a flat pint .I would still go with, Burley, PeterTaylor, and [i know ill get slated] it could even be worth giving Steve Tilson a thought .We really are unlikely to attract many top managers, lets be honest .But someone who has experience as a manager, and can get along with players , whilst some would argue,i dont believe Keane measures up to either. One thing for sure we need to stop this rot .

It would be wrong to suggest that last night's 'performance' was anything short of shocking. Terrible. However, this was afterall our first home loss in 6 months. That's no excuse of course, but we were bound to have an off day eventually.

I won't be calling for Roy's head - far from it. But I expect to see better at the next home game (I can't make Swansea unfortunately).

kirbs added 17:31 - Mar 24
jas009 - its not an off day tho is it we have had atleast 8 shockin performances, after that no one can defend keane he has made a catologue of mistakes and even if keeps us up he should get the sack as the season has been disaterous and no town fan can deny that! He is no good and never will be with our club why can't town fans see it it's mad! Do the right thing evens and sack him now and bring burley or curbishly then you might see us in the premiership next year!
KEANO OUT!

Assessment of Keane:
Buys badly and spends more money than we've had for years!
Sells young talent - RHODES
Never sticks with a winning team
Goodbye Roy!

I have had the mis-fortune of seeing the games against Blackpool (away), Scunthorpe and Barnsley. Couldn't make last night due to work. But what I have read doesn't surprise me.

We appear to have no ideas on how to break teams down, the players clearly no-longer want to play for Keane, I suspect in their minds we are already safe for the season.

The only hope for this club is to gain the 3-4 points to avoid relagation and to lose the rest heavily. It really does need something like this to emphise how bad a team we are, despite having some good players in order to get rid of Keane once and for all. The sooner he and his miserable band of useless backroom staff go the better it will be for the future of Ipswich Town.

For crying out loud......PROTEST U LIGHTWEIGHTS,its the only way we are going to get rid of this muppet, what are you scared of,Keane telling you off or LOCKING YOU IN THE GROUND FOR ANOTHER 1.5 HOURS OF COMPLETELY CRAP,CLUELESS,FOOTBALL,Ive been saying it all season, guys just listen to some of our more senoir fans like the true gent who rang in to radio suffolk after last nights game......59 years a town fan AND THE 1ST TIME HES EVER LEFT A GAME EARLY....and hes not renewing next year if this idiot is still there......nor will i even come back along with the other 10,000 fans who might just think about it if we appoint curbs.EVANS get this idiot out now before its too late....nuff said :(

that was just not acceptable, I thought we were finally getting somewhere but clearly not.......i have always support Keano but after that shambles i think it may be time to move on........ a team of sunderland rejects is not good enough- the hefty transfer budgets have caused nothing but problems...bring back the days where we had no money but a team willing to fight an finish in the top 3...i remember when the £250k spent on a certain Darren Currie was a huge deal.....

I agree naaridge, Watching the highlights of West Ham v Wolves and the whole ground singing 'your not fit to wear the shirt', and to think they were lower than us only a few seasons ago! No atmosphere or passion at Portman Road these days and the wally brigade are taking over.

Counago for manager.

We wouldn't stick it up them, but we'd have the tricks and know when to hit the turf.

Was really hoping Keane would eventually get it right and things would fall into place. Have been going to games for 42 years, a season ticket holder for many years and havent missed a home game this season. Had a sense very early on that we had no cohesion, no flair ( and havent had all season) and no guts. The season for me has been full of frustration and disappointment. In my lifetime of watching Town, I have always felt that every opposing team can be beaten by us. In fact the stronger the opposition, the more the excitement.
I have not felt that confidence at all this year.
Things have to change. I would like to know why Keane stays in his seat when his side are crying out to be coached and guided! Especially
as he appears to be a very passionate man.
Last night was awful I'm afraid
