Keane: First Goal Crucial
Keane: First Goal Crucial
Tuesday, 23rd Mar 2010 23:38

Boss Roy Keane thought his Town side started slowly and crucially conceded the game’s first goal in the 2-0 home defeat to Plymouth.

Keane said: "We were a bit sluggish. The first goal was always going to be vital and we didn't get it.

"The players got a bit frustrated and to give two bad goals away didn't help. We gave them a helping hand and got punished for our mistakes.

"We huffed and puffed but became a bit predictable. The word tonight is frustration, rather than anger.

"Had Plymouth opened us up and scored good goals it would be one thing, but we gave two bad ones away.

"There will be the usual over-reaction but we have to remember it was our first home defeat since September.

"We had good opportunities but didn't hit the target. That was frustrating and has been a problem all season. We don't score enough goals and are liable to give bad ones away."

Plymouth boss Paul Mariner unsurprisingly enjoyed his evening back at Portman Road: "It was a special night. I got a tremendous reception from the fans and can't thank them enough.

"We had a great rapport together when I played here but, equally, it was pretty special coming back in my present role with Plymouth.

"I thought my players were unbelievable and extremely professional. There's a resilience and willingness and these lads really want to get out of this. They're peeved by the situation we're in.

"They're buying into what we're trying to do and I'm loving working with them. Everybody played their part and even the lads on the bench made an impact.

"Every game has been a six-pointer for many months but what we've got to build now is confidence. When you're at the bottom of the table that's difficult.

"I thought it was going to be our night and it turned out to be that way. We were blocking stuff and heading it away."

Have always been pro=Keane but am now having real doubts as to whether he is the right man for the job. I think we will stay up but i now have lost confidence in him turning things around in the summer and building a promotion challenging team for next season. I have had a couple of thoughts like this earlier in the season and each time we have then picked up a few good results, but i cannot see that happening this time. Really concerned that players dont seem to want to play for us anymore. Sort it out now!

Do the decent thing Roy , resign and let us get back to being known as
"IPSWICH TOWN FC"

NOT "Roy Keane's Ipswich".

man its been a long season he should of gone along time ago.and to all you keanites who have been abusing me all year i say you were wrong i was right' lets get rid of this fool of a manager.its amazing how some people are blinded by the cult of the celebrity and can not see reality ...results' points 'playing style etc. please bring in a manager who spends less time in front of the tv cameras and more on the training pitch who can get off the bench and show some emotion for his team and has a proven track record of playing good football and getting results

Give the man some respect, he's earned it in the game. You can say you'd prefer him gone if you like, but let's not be abusive.

Well said bennyblue sometimes I have felt very much in the minority over Keane & I get no satisfaction watching my much loved team serve up dross, I sense the tide has turned against Keane now & I hope his days are numbered.
I don't care who comes in next, someone who cares would be good, I have a good friend who's a West Ham Fan & she thinks Curbs was OK he was undermined by the then owners & treated badly as his pay-out showed. I personally would like to see an experienced manager, who knows how to motivate & likes to play the game the 'Ipswich way' Arsene Wenger perhaps????

Well! that was absolutely dire last night, ashamed to call myself a Town fan today. I've had to endure loads of Paul Whitehouse 'Green Army' impressions (off the Aviva ad if you didn't know) from glory hunting Man U and Arsenal 'fans', quite funny actually- I had to laugh, well you've got to haven't you otherwise you'd cry after watching the dross served up this season.

Again the whinging Ipswich fans are out in force. Bad night I agree those fo you threatening RK that your patience is wearing thin (sorry it still makes me laugh) I am sure he is sitting at home shaking in his boots, and as for Kirbs (who should we appoint now) that gave me the biggest laugh after a bleak result. Unless you're ME in disguise YOU won't be appointing anyone. get a grip people first defeat at home since September, I think we will beat Swansea we always play better against the top teams.

And for all those on here (probably most of you whingers were saying this) 'Don't change a winning team!' Look how far that got us....RK just play the team that you think can do the job that is what you are paid for. And for those who kept crying 'Play Garvan he's are most creative midfield...well at least he created a goal last night pity it was for the other team.

Finally have to say I would rather lose to Plymouth than a lot of other teams as I want Mariner to get them out of trouble, I don't think he will but I hope he does.

id rather not lose too anyone friend or foe. your right i am sure roy couldnt care less if he gets the boot hes probably got that covered in his contract we might lose reguraly but roy will always win. but your wrong about the fans not making a difference once the support starts to drop off by several thousand at home games evans will take heed he is after all a business man who is trying to make money out of running the club.as for roy there will always be some other sucker chairman/ owner who thinks regular appearances on sky by their celebrity manager is great for their club who knows he may even manage another team well 'but he aint doing well here so get lost roy before you destroy our great club as for evans he has made a bad business decision that he will have to correct at some point hopefully very soon

All the whinging and wining of the season long anti Keane Brigade sticks in my throat still today as they prance onto the key board saying I told you so....like many I thought it a bold move for Keane, and yes, believed all the hype...like many others I believed he was turning the club around... and yes one questioned certain decisions...and like many others Tuesday night was the watershed in realising that Keane is not the one for next season...like many others I don't like chopping and changing managers. But reading on here all the "Told You So" missives...well I for one, like many others wanted to believe...so yes you are right but it sticks in my throat.....

I am still dismayed at the performance of the majority of the players in the last game. I too would have liked to seen RK up on his feet and giving them direction. I think that he believes that they should be able to sort things out themselves - but clearly, they can't.

Much as the blame can be rightly attributed to RK, some of our players are not perfroming as (very well paid) professionals.

There have been too many 'false dawns' in the second half of this season. I'm neither pro or anti Keane, but the table does not lie.

Unless there is a remarkable turn around between now and the end of the season, I can see ME wielding the axe...

keane reckoned on making a big impression when he arrived, he has !,in the cushion he feckin sits on in dug outs . Shame he is better at pocket billiards than football management .

bennyblue added 10:42 - Mar 25
have you any evidence to suggest his pocket billiard exploits are any better than his teams performances ive never noticed him smiling in the recent photos.maybe his problem is he hasnt got any billiards

RK will be here next season get use to the idea. ME knows bar a miracle or just a whole lot of luck (something we have not had this season) it takes more than one season to build a new team. That is why he gave RK a two year contract. as for falling off fans he knows they will come crawling back with the 'I never doubted RK for a minute attitude.' once the team is fighting for promotion.

RK's biggest mistake was believing his own hype and looking at promotion for this season instead of saying it was going to take time from the get-go. For myself I knew it would take time I have seen too many managers rebuild teams after supporting Ipswich for 40 years, including the late great Sir Bobby.

The only time we have had a lot of luck is when John Lyall won us the 2nd division in his first season but look where that led us. We were not ready for the premiership he handed the reigns to McGiven and we had the most embarrassing Ipswich team of all time. As one commentator said "Ipswich are the boring draw specialists of all time, thankfully that won't save them."

I for one look forward to seeing RK's Ipswich next season, were I think our lot will completely different to this season. But if it doesn't come off, if we are not challenging for promotion then I think ME will take action, but then again that is only a guess.

Wickedblue - I season ticket sales go down then roy keane will not be here next year, bet he gets sacked either when were safe or at the end o the season. keane is a crap manager so get over it! even though he got sunderland promted he spent £80 million and only just kept em in the premier league, they even said that he destroyed there club! I hear cambridge united manager is under pressure so there's an option for keane if they will have him :)
