Keane: Speculation Comes With the Territory
Keane: Speculation Comes With the Territory
Friday, 2nd Apr 2010 11:07

Town manager Roy Keane says this week’s speculation regarding his future comes with the territory and is something he has experienced on many occasions during his time in football. Over the last week, a number of national newspapers have claimed that Keane is set to lose his job at Portman Road.

Keane, who was unaware of Saturday’s newspaper reports prior to the 0-0 draw at Swansea, says the conjecture has had little if any effect on him: “I’ve been away for a few days with my family, so it’s not been a problem for me. It probably doesn’t help from the players’ point of view and maybe the staff and the supporters, but, it’s all part of the game. I’ve experienced it many times before, but it certainly doesn’t help.

“I’ve been down this road before. I had it just before I left Manchester United with a lot of media building up a head of steam about stuff I was supposed to have said, stuff I was supposed to have done. Lies after lies.

“I had it just before I left Sunderland, more lies there and unfortunately a lot of people got sucked into them and believed them.”

The Blues boss, who as promised last week chose not to answer questions on national football issues, says he is concentrating on the task in hand: “I’m very focused on the job.

“I know we’ve had a disappointing season but it’s been more down to us having so many draws rather than defeats. That’s been a problem for us, but I’ve generally been pleased with the players, they keep going out there and keep giving 100% for the football club.

“I’m focused on that, I’ve got two years to try and turn the club around and that’s my intention.”

Keane has been pleased with the way fans have backed both him and his team throughout the season: “The supporters have really got behind the team.

“I think the fans have seen that there’s been plenty of effort from the players, we’ve just lacked that cutting edge and I understand the frustration of the supporters, nobody needs to tell me that.

“But hopefully the majority are behind us and they’ll see that tomorrow because it’s not through lack of effort from the players.”

I couldn't give a rats arse what he makes of Man U and practically everyone else except Ipswich Town on Sky Sports news! I want to hear what he makes of ITFC! But he's publicity gold for the club when he's on Sky, what's the name you see behind him....Marcus Evans.
But at least he's realised that he needs to focus on us, not on who's going to win the prem, what he makes of Ireland blah blah blah.
And you're right Mr Keane, majority of the fans have been very patient so far and getting behind the club, lets hope the atmosphere is loud and proud tomorrow. Hard game but we desperately need 3 points

All cliches in today's press conference... Nothing new or interesting.

Liked the comment about two years to turn the club around. A change in the spin from when he took over...

A dignified response from Keano, once more. There is certainly no lack of effort from the players or manager and they deserve some rousing support tomorrow.

I'd be happy with draw tomorrow. Reading have been in a false position all season and their recent form shows just that. Having said that, let's make it loud and see if we can be the 12th man. Onward and upward!

The prospect of having RK at the helm for another 2 years is unthinkable. The man is simply a very poor manager.
Transfer market: diabolical - the worst we've ever had. Priskin, Edwards and Martin are obvious but the loan signings of Rosenior, when we so clearly didnt need him, and the out of shape Healy also show to me that the guy hasn't got a scooby what he's doing. Letting Rhodes, Haynes and Richards go were poor decisions as was loaning out Stead and Bruce.
Man Management: Garvan, Macaulay, Wright and Pablo all dumped in the reserves for inferior players, hardly inspirational.
Team selection: Clueless.. how many points did we loose in the first few months of the season before RK realised that Macaulay was by miles our best centre half? It is totally beyond me how anyone could think Smith or Pim is a better centre half than Macaulay. That decision should have taken 5 minutes not 5 months. How many points did we loose until RK realised that Garvan is head and shoulders above Trotter? How many more points until he realises that Walters upsets the balance of the team.
Motivation: Clearly very poor, the players have been so scared to fail all season that they have frozen time and time again.
What aspect of football management is RK good at? Press conferences - f**king great!

To points raised regarding team selection by titaniclown above, McAuley has played in 35 (1 as sub) of the 40 games played so far, including 5 of first 7 games before getting himself sent off v Forest and suspended as a result. He may have missed 1/2 through injury as well. His form early in the season was very poor, and was rightly dropped. It is credit to RK's man management that all of the players dropped returned highly motivated, including Garvan, unfortunately the latter returned to casual mode fairly quickly and will surely be sold, along with Counago & Stead, if offers come in. As good a ball player as he is, he doesnt look capable of winning the midfield battle week in, week out, and no CM will prosper in this division who cant. Trotter isnt good enough, but he does compete.

You havent mentioned the players signed that have done well- Begovic, Lee Barratt, B. Murphy, Delaney, O'Connor, Leadbitter, Colback, D. Murphy.
I would included Rosenior in that number also, D. Wright deserves a new contract, for his experience and ability to provide cover across the back 4, but he isnt premiership class, Rosenior has premiership experience and ability. I think Edwards chould be given an opportunity right full also where he has played previously.
Walters's is in the team for his leadership & work ethic, but agreed his place may be in jeopardy next season.
It takes time to build a team, RK totally rebuilt Sunderland to win the division.

RK didn't rebuild Sunderland to win the division. That's rubbish...

jbb - agree with you apart from keane didn't rebuild sunderland to take them up but did rebuild them to keep them up.
titanicclown you have picked a name that suits you

RK did in fact rebuild sunderland to take them up. They were bottom when he took over. They had already offloaded most of their best players, and he soon sold two more, stead & elliott to raise funds. He brought in 6 players within a week or two of taking over and another 6 in the jan transfer window, David Connolly (top scorer), Wallace (now preston), Kavanagh,Fulop, Varga, Yorke, Stern John, Miller, Anthony Stokes, Carlos Edwards plus Johny Evans & simpson (man utd) were brought in on loan.
He rebuilt the team again on acheiving promotion, bringing in mostly championship players for sizeable fees but moderate wages by premship standards.

Jbb, I get your stats about Macaulay but the fact still remains that RK genuinely thought that Pim was a better player than Macaualy. Just like he genuinely thought Trotter was a better player than Garvan. Anyone with brain, not even a football brain should be able to see this after one training session. He has wasted money like no manager is our history whilst giving away most of our young talent. This rebuilding which is being being mentioned is just pie in the sky. What's being built? What is RK's method? We have a history at this club of playing passing football not kick and rush, win at all costs garbage. I dont care who is at the helm RK, Pele or the bloody pope nothing is more important at our club than the style and manner in which we play. Under RK it aint gonna happen.

Titaniclown, I agree re Pim, my impression of him from day one was that he was nowhere near championship standard. I am not sure RK rated him a better CB than McAuley, I think he stated very early in the season that he had a lot of time for McAuley. Regarding selling young players, if the club consider they have a good offer for someone who is not likely to be a first 11 player, they are right to sell him to balance the books. Rhodes was a similar type of player to Wickham, but potentially not as good, and there may not have been room for both.
Priskin and Martin havent worked out, but both are young.
Regarding style of football, there is no bigger advocate than RK of playing the game the right way. Each of his clubs as a player- Forest, Utd and Celtic played that way. He was always at loggerheads with Jack Charlton and Mick McCarthy in the Irish set up due to their wish to play the long ball game. I suspect one of the reasons he prefers D.Murphy to Stead is that Murphy, as well as being a target man, has good control and can bring others into the game, whereas Stead hasnt.
Playing good football has to start from the back, and unfortunately, though all have their merits, the present back four are not very comfortable on the ball, maybe thats why he played Pim, as he is a reasonable distributor of the ball.
