Keane: Core of Squad Has Emerged
Keane: Core of Squad Has Emerged
Thursday, 8th Apr 2010 13:26

Boss Roy Keane says the core of a squad for next season has emerged in recent weeks as he looks ahead to the 2010/11 campaign. The Town manager says he is aware of the areas he needs to strengthen and who might be on their way out of Portman Road.

Keane said: "I have certainly learned a lot about the group here over the last two or three months.

"We have shown we are still capable of shooting ourselves in the foot now and again, like we did at Watford, Peterborough and against Plymouth, but we have also shown we can dig in and get results like we did last week against Reading and Derby.

"We have made progress over the last few months, definitely, and I can see the core of the squad now.

"I'm 99 per cent sure of the players that I think can have a good season next year and a few that unfortunately will probably have to leave.

“I think there are one or two players where we might have to look at it. Like every club we’ll have a good look at ourselves in the summer and see which players we feel we’ll have on board and which players might have to look elsewhere, but that goes on at every club.”

Keane, who is yet to talk to chief executive Simon Clegg regarding a summer budget, has previously said he hopes to have a smaller squad for 2010/11.

'Aware of the areas he needs to strengthen' - he said that at the beginning of the season. Then bought Martin & realised he's useless , then sold Jordan Rhodes, then bought Priskin & loaned him out. When is the next waste of money?
He can't judge players, can't adopt decent tactics etc etc. Get him out & give us our teamm back

Think Blue Boots has this one wrapped up. Not too far out I'm guessing, not sure about Richard Wright and if he's happy to be 2nd string and his contract is up in summer?

Colback would be quality but I agree that could become a GIO GIO GIO all over again, I hope our little [or not so little] Argie is on the mend - isn't he due back for an early preseason?

hey blue knight - I hate to burst the bubble but Colback will definitely be at Sunderland next season i would suspect. Steve Bruce is one for giving the kids a chance. We have a kid in our team now called Jordan Henderson who spent last season at Coventry and he is now a part of our first team. I suspect that Colback may make a similar breakthrough next year for us. It depends on Bruce of course and if he decides that Colback needs more experience, I would hope that he remains at Ipswich for a while longer.

"i hate to burst the bubble but Colback will definitely be at Sunderland next season i would suspect" - this sentence makes no sense i wish people thought abit harder when they post things on here - Im not expecting Colback to be with us next year but i doubt we'll see him playing that many games next season for Sunderland either

Okay, let me clarify that for you since you seem to be a funny guy. Colback will be back at Sunderland next year.

and in relation to the article, i think jaime peters has proved his worth recently, keep him in keano, or i will never forgive you!

Crock "I hope Evans is also aware of who will be on their way out".
There might be one name that Mr Evans might like to add to that list that Keane hadn't got in mind.

MACKEMYANK - I'm guessing this time last season, you might have said "Leadbitter - no chance mate !!!!" too? :^D

Last I heard, Bruce had a couple of midfielders on his shopping list (O'Hara was one), so I wouldn't be surprised if Colback was back either permanently, or on loan again.

I was sad when Leadbitter was sold - and suprised. He always gave 100% and he is one of our own - a Mackem. I am glad he is doing as well as he is...... But Colback will be back up here. I think that Keane should try and get him on loan again if he can and I am sure he rates him enough to try. We shall see.

ITFC1985 this is site for comments and Blogs about ITFC not a site for learning, criticising, or discussing English grammar and or spelling.

Mackemyank the best you can hope for regarding Colback is that he only goes on loan again just like us and any other football team you cant keep every player unfortunately :( you can have him back if we can have Bent back on a free :D

Darren Bent is god !!!

It will be criminal if bent is not in the world cup squad even at Tottenham he scored loads given the amount of games he played iv always thought him and Rooney would be great together based on styles of play but England were a joke when bent got his last chance in the team they barely gave him a ball to do anything with.
i was hoping man-utd were going to get splash out for him from Tottenham but they went and got Owen on a free instead if he finishs on a high i wouldnt be suprised if someone "big" <<< (:P) comes knocking this time especially if he does end up in the world cup and gets his chance

Thought he said a year ago that he didn't see the point in making too many changes to the squad - he's made around 20+...should be a good start to next season though, either we'll be flying near the top of the table or we'll have a better manager in place...bring it on.

youve blown it now keano the clown and your silly mate. what was a well judged joke that even pro-keaners would have found funny has now become a boring, repetitive waste of everyones time. i just skip past it now, you must have a lot of time on your hands if you actually spent the time to make the picture, post your comments, probably whilst posting as an alter ego. you sad, sad little man. go outside, drink a beer, speak to a girl - you never know you might like it!

season salvaged at long last, coyb!

Haha Darren Bent, for all the goals he scored for us I will still remember him for an interview on the radio before our play-offs home victory over West Ham when every response he gave began with "yeah, well, definitly I mean" in the same idiotic voice.. dont get me wrong I will always love him for almost firing us to the premier league, but he was really, really thick.

tom the blue... its lucky we were paying him to be a football player and not a public speaker then isn't it

Rather than post some sensible constructive comments and debate where Ipswich can strengthen in the summer, there is the usual idiotic posts. Some just say 'We want Keane Out'. Why? Do we? Ignoring the first 14 games, our record has been pretty good. Recent results have also beendecent, and I for one have seen enough to renew my season ticket, support the lads and hopefully see an improvement in league position next year.

For what it's worth, I would sign a left back, centre half (as cover), an attacking midfielder and two strikers. I would offload the deadwood, sending most loanees back (we will have little choice re Colback), selling the ones we have sent out on loan (if anyone wants them). D Murphy should be signed. Oh and Rosenior is probably worth a deal.

You are about as funny as a heart attack!

I would sign murphy and one other striker along with Priskin and Wickham Walters is a 5th option upfront when needed.
I to would sign left back someone who is 25+ bit of experience i wouldnt bother with Rossenior unless he is cheap to pay instead i would find a youngster like O'connor to work with behind David wright.
i would maybe loan another CB from somewhere as cover rather than buy one as you would expect tommy smith to be coming in, I imagine eastmen will go out on loan next year
i would buy one winger of sorts im not sure which side preferably both assuming Civelli stays and does well he will be on the left so probably someone mainly for the right Ambrose would be nice :D
if Colback is not available by another loan or to buy i think another CM a young one with promise on loan would be a good idea or buy someone else and sell Garvan
i would let R.wright go he is probably on good pay new players as an example only not who i think we could or should get :P >>>

Murphy Chopra

Civelli Leadbitter Norris Ambrose

O'connor/new bloke Delaney McCauley Wright

B. Murphy

Bench:
A.Lee Barret - T.smith - Edwards - Martin- walters- Priskin - Wickham

Alternating Bench:
Garvan or new CM loan or buy
Peters
Rosenior or new young RB

Fringe /out on loan
Murray or some other new hot thing ( i dnt know how good murray is )
Eastman
Mcloughlin (3rd Keeper)
Hyam
Clark

Sold/Released
Stead
Quinn
Pim
Bruce (think he is still only out on loan isn't he? i forget him easilly)
R.wright
Lisbie
Trotter
Counago

i think iv forgotten a few names but its getting late and need to walk dog l8rz :P

I might post this to Keane and save it for when new championship manager is out to :P

Looks to me from his team selection that Keane sees the following players as the core of his squad:

Murphy, Delaney, McCauley, Walters, Leadbitter, Norris, Wickham

Three on that list were purchased by Magilton, and Delaney's move was I seem to remember also initiated before Keane arrived!

Possibly D. Wright, O'Connor and Peters should be added.

None of the rest of the current squad (loaness excluded) have impressed this season. Predicting who will leave and who will be bought (including perhaps one or two current loanees) is a more difficult matter, and is not totally in the manager's control. I would imagine that he sees Stead, Quinn, Pim, Bruce, R, Wright, Lisbie, Trotter, Garvan, Priskin and Counago as surplus to requirements. Not sure about Edwards or Martin though. He still keeps giving them both opportunities.
