Keane Off to the World Cup
Keane Off to the World Cup
Thursday, 6th May 2010 09:03

Boss Roy Keane says he’ll take in a few games at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. The Blues boss hopes defender Tommy Smith makes the final New Zealand 23 having been included in the preliminary squad of 30.

Keane, who knows New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert having worked alongside him on coaching courses, says it will be a feather in the club’s cap to have a representative in South Africa: “It’ll be great to have an Ipswich Town player at the World Cup and, please God, Tommy will be in there.

“I know he’s in the initial squad of 30, but I know that’s being cut down in the next week or two.”

A trip to the World Cup is on Keane’s summer agenda but unlike in previous close seasons the Town manager has no plans to go on any coaching courses: “I’m sick of courses, I’ve been on the best course for the last 10 months - that’s working here. In the job is the best course you can get.

“[First team coach] Tony Loughlan’s going on one or two, [fitness coach] Antonio Gomez is always doing stuff. It’s good for the staff and my staff are very open-minded and always willing to learn.

“I’ve no plans to go on any courses. I’ve had busy four or five years with different courses and hopefully I’ll be busy this summer, watching one or two matches, having a trip to the World Cup and trying to speak to one or two players [now that the season has ended].”

Fitness coach Gomez is set to run a course at El Instituto Municipal de Juegos y Deportes back in Lorca in his native Spain next month before he returns for pre-season which starts on June 28th.

But Ireland did not qualify due to Mr Henry's cheating so there's no point going there!

Do we think that he'll stay the course over there or will he throw a hissy-fit, make some racist comments about a manager and then strop off home to walk his dog? LOL...

In all seriousness though, There isn't many international footballers who would want to sign for Ipswich. Although we may find a gem from Hondurus or somewhere, best of luck Keano.

The only thing the World Cup does is inflate prices on players who may have a few good games while prospective purchasers are watching. Stick with your usual plan of trailing ex Man U/Sunderland/Irish players Keano.

Looks like Gio DID make the squad..."and brothers Jonathan and Giovani Dos Santos were among the 10 Europe-based players added by Mexico to its preliminary World Cup roster Saturday". He is in the Panini sticker book so must be a cert for the final squad!

Good on ya Keane, look for maybe a international who is at one of the underdogs in competition like South Africa or Honduras and take a look at someone who could play for us and fit in fine, striker in particular. What is with some moaners on this page, infact why are the moaners even supporting this club?

I wonder if Keane will be on the New Zealand bench glaring at Tommy Smith. Maybe even give him a dressing down at half time before deciding the world cup can stick it's worl cup up their bollocks??

I Don't agree at all with how you see the club and i will be here supporting town long after you and long after blue square premier failure if we dissolved and ceased to exsist i would be the man that starts us up again on a sports centre pitch
