Keane: We Need to Be More Streetwise
Keane: We Need to Be More Streetwise
Tuesday, 18th May 2010 15:05

Boss Roy Keane has reiterated his desire to add more “streetwise” players to his squad over the summer. Keane feels the 2009/10 team lacked a bit of Championship experience and savvy and is hoping to remedy the situation before the start of the new season.

Keane told the club site: "There are certain positions in the team where we are lacking the right characters. Last season we lacked that streetwise player who would tell players it's time to shut up shop, calm everyone down a bit.

"We'd still be going gung-ho at the end of a game when we needed a player to take his time over a freekick, to slow the game down - collect a booking if need be.

"When I'm talking about the right characters - I'm talking about someone who knows the Championship, someone who is vocal in the dressing room, someone who has a big physical presence about them, has got vast experience behind them. We are lacking that sort of player in two or three areas."

Keane has previously said he will be aiming to make four or five summer signings during the close season.

Did he not talk about getting a striker or 2 in yesterday's interview or does he need to repeat it every day

he doesnt identify the type of player he wants, to maybe reassure the fans that he knows what hes talking about? You know hes just going to get in another lump of a striker, if anything.

This site is turning into a knob-fest. Why don't you all quit whinging? It's going to be a long summer, the seasons not even complete and it's the same people saying the same comments over and over again regardless of the topic.

GET A LIFE or go 'support' somebody else.

Agree, The Snake! We should support the effort that Keane is making. For good or for bad he is our manager and we should expect that he can do it. As of these statements he did - well I don't believe a lot all these interviews and etc. I am not sure about the previuos one that Keane has found his goalscorer. This is all words to get attention. What will happen in fact - we will see during the summer. I only hope we get the right additions because with this weaker league next season we have our best shot! Let's not waste it!
Come on!!!

ChambersM - His comments relate to THE END OF GAMES "We'd still be going gung-ho at the end of a game when we needed a player to take his time over a freekick, to slow the game down"

I haven't looked at the site for a few weeks, but the same posters and comments keep coming up.

Relax everyone, we can't drop any points or lose any games for weeks yet. Go and watch some cricket with a pint in your hand and forget about football. RK is paid lots of money to sort things out while we enjoy the summer, if it arrives.

We can be pretty certain that if ITFC aren't in contention at Christmas 2010. RK will be shown the door. But as ever, as a supporter of the football club, I hope this is not the case.

Never have I felt happier about 3 months off football than this summer. Then I read this tripe and I now wish we had three years until it starts again. Keane has no clue

I agree with ChambersM

Since when has the refreshing, straight talking RK said anything that did not come back to haunt him. I think RK should stop doing interviews until he has something important to say.

The media can go report on the World cup soon, and find other sports to cover during the summer.

If this is how the next 3 months is going to be like then I will see you in August

I think this Townsend from Tottenham would be a great signing and I think we should go all out to get Robert Koren now WBA have released him. Those two will totally transform our one dimensional midfield. Get in Hooper and a right back and a left back and we would be sorted. Maybe Naylor from Celtic.

For Beattie's sake - stop going on about characters and start buying some then! Come on RK - stop talking and start doing. Be a character yourself, rather than quietly sitting in the dugout looking like you don't give a toss.

We need decent players - who can actually play. Yes, get a couple of big lads in who can mix it - we are a bit too soft sometimes.

I think you'll find Roy that we were going "gung-ho" at the end of games because more often than not we were losing (i.e. not winning).

As long as its not Stern John again I really dont mind! Alot of the names banded around would be a good shout, my Arsenal friend reckons Jay Simpson who was on loan at QPR this season would do a good job for us and would be available but would only likely be a loan deal. Hooper for me is the man I would like to see Keane sign but if I am honest I can see other teams beating us to him. Lots of players being released who would more than do a job for us, anyone care to get a list going?

By streetwise does he mean thug style, like him as a player ?

dirtydingusmagee added 14:58 - May 19
P M ,it means the team will be wearing baseball caps back to front ,saying yo ,and givinit da high fives ,and possibly spinnin on their heads if they score .

I wish there was less talk about characters and more about some actual qualities that would win us some games, i.e quality, creativity, width to name but three. Actually, add to that a style of play as quite frankly for large periods we didn't have one. Yes you undoubtedly need characters, but a team needs a balance of qualities, so often last season the balance was not right, and we simply had not got the style of play or sufficient quality to turn draws into wins.

But why would Evans necesarily dip his hand into his pockets so readily again after money was so badly squandered last season? When looking at return on investment he must look at the spend, look at where we finished last season in comparsion to previous seasons and the points tally we accumlated and then must be hesistant about throwing good money after bad. Surely a management team should be working hard on moulding a cohesive team, not just throwing the dice and signing player after player in the hope it eventually works?

Too much churn of players will not help build a successful team. I would look to shift some players on before bringing anymore in, but when we are to sign players during the summer, I hope the homework isn't as shoddy as last year.
