Hollman: England Should Stick With Green
Hollman: England Should Stick With Green
Monday, 14th Jun 2010 21:42

Town goalkeeper-coach Jim Hollman says he expects Fabio Capello to stick with Robert Green when England face Algeria on Friday, despite the former Norwich man’s disastrous error during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the USA. Hollman worked with Green during his time coaching at Carrow Road.

Hollman told the club site: "I was disappointed for Rob, especially as I know him personally, but he will have his own strategies in place to deal with what happened.

"He's very strong mentally and he showed that after the mistake. Goalkeepers tend to fall into three categories after an error like that. There are those that try too hard to make up for it and are a bit rash, those that hide and don't make any decisions and those that do what Rob does and put it behind them straight away and carry on as though it has not happened.

"With their goal coming when it did, he had the time to prove to the manager - who is the only one that matters - that he can do the job and he did that. That will hold him in good stead, as well as the way he conducted himself after the game, around the camp and with the media. I think Capello will stick with him."

Former Town youth and reserves keeper Hollman was at Carrow Road between 2001 and 2007, joining Town in 2008.

To be frank, why not leave Green in? What other choices do we have? Joe Hart is a talented prospect but the World Cup is not ideal for an international rookie. The only other choice we have is nicknamed "Calamity". Oh dear.....

Robert Green = not qualifying. James will sneak us through to lose in the next round against Germany.

I thought Capello was a good manager but am starting to wonder if he continues with that clown in goal.

Has anyone actually seen James play for the last few years, Living in Pompey I've seen him a few times and he is England's no 1, being 40 (in August) has nothing to do with it. He has made some amazing saves, and lets be fair, playing for Pompey he's had to make more than his fare share. Green has FCUK'd up for West Sham this year on many occations. Hart is defo one for the future, even now though is better than Green. Capello will start Green because if he doesn't he is admitting he's made the wrong decision, I have a feeling he's not that type of person.

I really hope that if green plays, he plays blinders and wins us the world cup with a dramatic penalty save, however can you honestly say that he's that good?

Agreed Mickey. James is the best we have at the moment. Green has been toss for most of the year. Capello ain't gonna admit he was wrong, thus Green will play.

What's wrong with Joe Hart ? If you not going to play him, why take him? Blood him in the early games and let him grow - he's the only keeper with a future for England longterm. I'm thinking Green will end up down the Robinson footpath after that howler - harsh, but that's life.

If I made an error like that at work I too would be sacked! However, a keeper makes one mistake and it's curtains - forwards can make them time and time again, but get one thing right and they're heroes - how F****ed up is that?

Agree with Mickey , cant remember James's last mistake. He seems to have got much better last 2 or 3 years .

Lets go with David James: I'm sure he has a practised handling Belhadj's lethal shots in training!

Putting aside any Budgie rivalry, I still think James is our best keeper. To be honest, I wouldn't have objected if he had taken Paul Robinson in the squad.

Think about it Green has already made a mistake if he starts he will have nothing to lose and will want to prove all the doubters wrong/ Fabio right. With a major mistake behind him he wont be nervous. I think although he is scum we should stick with him.

You'd think that with six fingers on each hand, Green would have been able to stop that ball!

i would have put James in, but Green got the nod,and if Capello chose him as best keeper,he cant just change him for a mistake, he could be doing that every match ! .

The entire team need to do much better. Yes, Green gifted the yanks a goal but Heskey missed at least 3 good chances and neither Rooney or Lampard (amongst others) turned up, so the blame should be shared throughout the team and not just heaped on Green.

The chances of him making that sort of mistake again in the tournament are (hopefully) pretty slender, so keeping him in there shouldn't be disastrous. That said, I think James is on better form and is much more experienced at international level, and would be the better option if fit.

so, everyone's written green off because he made one mistake. sure, it cost us a win but to slaughter him for it is stupid. i think it's more to do with his norwich connection as far as the people on here are concerned. so what? you wouldn't be calling for his head if he'd had a blinding game and perish the thought, if we were to actually win the world cup with him in goal, what are you going to do then? i reckon capello has him in the team because he's a keeper he rates. and the manager knows a LOT more than you!
