Wright: I Can Still Play at the Top Level
Wright: I Can Still Play at the Top Level
Sunday, 20th Jun 2010 09:40

Released keeper Richard Wright says he still has what it takes to play in the Premier League. The 32-year-old is understood to have held talks with West Ham regarding a possible return to Upton Park, while League One Charlton have also been linked.

Wright said: "I still believe I can play at the highest level and know I can get back there. There has been a lot of interest but nothing concrete.

"My plan when I came back to Ipswich was to get back into the Premier League. I was dropping down to a club who were heading in the right direction, but it doesn't always work out.

"Hopefully, it will be a fresh start and exciting times for me. I believe in my own ability.

"It has been a frustrating year because of injury, but I cannot wait for a new challenge."

Wright started last season as the Blues' first choice, but lost his place after a number of costly errors. On his return to the side after loanee Asmir Begovic's departure, he picked up a knee ligament injury at Cardiff and despite making a swift recovery never returned to the team.

Meanwhile, former Blues boss Jim Magilton is understood to have been interviewed for the manager's job at Plymouth. Ex-Town striker Paul Mariner moved into a coaching role at Home Park at the end of the season, having taken control of the Pilgrims for much of 2009/10.

I'd say he should still be doing a job for us

For me he's not good enough, as the report says he made several costly errors early in the season, the defence have seemed happier when Wright hasn't been in goal. Wright has always been a fantastic shot stopper, but lacks a commanding presence & flaps at crosses something terrible.

He is deluded. Couldn't hold a Premiership place down when he was at his peak.

I think what he means is he can play snake on his phone in the highest terrace in the premier league while he sit's on £10,000 a week to be 3rd choice.
i would to though thats alot of money. and a better route into coaching

It sounds sound somewhat deluded and that he will take the highest pay cheque. However, I will say that I felt more confident in R.Wright a year ago than I do in Murphy now. Not that Murphy is shaky or a major problem, just that I am not sure he is the top class keeper that it was made out he could be when he joined the club.

better than what we have left. Not being irish is the nail in his coffin.

Wright was outstanding early last season... If it wasn't for him the start wouldn't have included any draws, let alone no wins.

Still consider him the top English goalkeeper, but suffered a dreadful loss of confidence being part of Keane's dreadful team at the start of last season. I suspect that we have seen the last of him, bar a few cameo appearances over the next 2-3 years. It's his own fault that his 'greed' in moving to Arsenal in 2001 led to both his own demise and that of Ipswich Town, so overall I don't have much sympathy with his messed-up career. If he had stayed here that summer, we would still be a Premiership team, and he would have 70+ England caps and be looking forward to facing Slovenia next Wednesday. What a mistaker-to-maker .....

Should still be at PR as no.1. The dreadful start in the season that suffolk n good talks about consides with the lack of defence and Delaney being played as left back when Keane the clueless was trying to find a starting lineup. He held his hand up to a couple of games that he wasn't happy with his performance and if not for his injury should have continued in goal. Was supporters player of the season year before, but sum fans have a very short memory!
If he goes to West Sham then can't do worse than Green anyway.

I cannot understand him, since leaving ipswich he has never been first choice, sitting on the bench for a lot of the games. I think we are good to get rid, a goalkeeper who seems content on going to a club which he is not a number 1 goalkeeper and content on staying on the bench shows no passion ust there for the money.

Yes he could say he is going to work hard at breaking into the number 1 spot but to be honest it didnt happen before and it wont happen again. I think this a very good example of why Supple left! ANyone else agree or am i being a bitch?

He obviously has a very high opinion of himself! What a joke, he let in 4 against Newcastle, in the Premiership they would be the least of his worries! He's not good enough for Town and he's certainly not good enough in the Premiership. I have no idea why West Ham want him back. Maybe he makes an amazing cup of tea, who knows.

some you people are unbelievable having a proper rant based on guess work..... "we should keep him coz Murphey is not good enough"....
What makes you think Murphey has or will ever be considered NO.1 ... any evidence iv seen says the oposite...

Start of last season Keane cinsidered wright to be number one...he bought murphey at the very start of the season ..not in january when he was availble to play sugesting he was getting murphey in to be number 2, a youngish prospect who could be good enough at some point to take over as No.1 or for ever be No.2 who knows...
wright was playing pants so he loaned in begovic whole team imprived. begovic went home wright came back in as No.1 got injured.. Aran-lee barret who was only here training while he looked for another low league club came in done ok Murphey got here to train and in january was actually aloud to start playing and as wright was injured he was No.1 by default by the time Wright was fit again he was playing Kak in the reserves and the season was nearly over and Keane would probably have allready decided to let him go as he was playing kak, getting old and has a long history of injuries...
Keane has suposildy been trying to get a top notch experienced keeper in to be No.1 it seems

making any arguement that wright shouldnt have been let go because Murphey makes you slightly nervous completely laughable..Even if you take away the very lose connection with another keeper away your still make huge guess work that Murphey would be Keanes first choice all season...
i understand he is an old favourite of some fans but things change players move and alot of people need to grow up and realise this...

He may well be good enough for us still but why should we pay him top doller and give him a new contract on a complete gamble being that his form and injuries and age sugest other wise marcus evens might be rich but theres no reason to waste his money on gambles.
And sugesting we should keep him on as a reserve keeper as some have done in the past is just rediculous lol

Wrighty is more than good enough to play for Ipswich town. If we can reach the promise land he would be my number 1 choice with out a doubt. Murphy is a cracking keeper too not taking that away from him, But i think the real reasons keane got rid was due to high wages and has a lot of history with town being a player and good buddys with jim magilton. Im sure if wrighty is given the chance he will do well for any club.

Wright went from player of the year to having a massive loss of confidence because Keane didnt know his best defence or team until almost Xmas ,Delaney on the left ,Wright in and out ,Mac in and out . How many other players had there worst season for Ipswich last year ?
Wright is still better than anyone else left at the club and Keane will be spending even more money on another keeper ,and if Wright was out of contract it has nothing to do with wages because we could just offer him a lesser deal and less money that did not happen . I agree he did make some costly errors but if that was the case Keane should be selling nearly all his playing staff from last year, he also made some great saves to get us the few points we did get early on ,and saved us from an absolute trouncing at West Brom

^^ I'm a better keeper than Keane is a manager. And I'm 47 with dodgy knees and vari-focals.

I disagree. Despite a decent first season back with us, Richard's form sadly dropped. BUT more importantly his injury problems returned and he missed several months of the season. As a high wage earner I can't see how clubs will take a risk with him.

WadzillaBoy - He did conceed 4 against Newcastle but at the end of the day he was playing behind a shoddy defence, he cant be expected to save everything thats thrown at him.

Hes a good keeper im not sure he'd be fighting for a premier league number 1 spot though, but definately a decent championship team, could probably still do a job for us......

Wrighty you could have fooled me; in my opinion the best you will get is splinters in the Premiership.

He would be staying with us if took 4k a week, but can get 12k in the reserves at a top team so he's off.
